Teaching music production online is the one subject where screen sharing works better than sitting next to someone. Here is how to set it up technically and teach it effectively.

How to Teach Music Production Online (2026)

Teaching music production online solves a problem that stumped instrument teachers for years: how do you show someone what you are doing at the software level without them physically looking at your screen? The answer is that you share your screen, and they follow along in their own DAW in real time. No camera angle for fingerboard position required. Just a clean screen share, good audio routing, and a structured lesson plan.

The technical setup is the part most production teachers get wrong. A lesson where the student cannot hear your DAW output because your audio routing is broken is not a lesson. It is a frustrating tech support call. Get the technical side right once, and it stops being a problem.

Why Online Works Well for Production Teaching

Instrument teaching online involves workarounds. Latency makes playing together in real time difficult. The camera cannot always capture what hands are doing at small frets or keys.

Production teaching does not have these problems. The DAW is on your screen. You share it. The student sees exactly what you are doing, at the plugin parameter level. They can follow along in their own session in real time. When you press a button, they press the same button in their DAW. There is no latency issue because you are not playing music together. You are working software together.

This makes screen sharing, which is a compromise for instrument teaching, the ideal medium for production instruction.

The Biggest Technical Challenge: Audio Routing

The most common production teaching failure is this: the student cannot hear your DAW output. They hear your voice but not your music. This happens because your DAW audio outputs to your interface or speakers by default, and the video call does not capture that signal.

You need to route your DAW audio through your computer's audio output in a way that the video call software can pick up. Here is how:

Mac: BlackHole

BlackHole is a free, open-source virtual audio driver for macOS. It creates a virtual audio device that can pass audio from one application to another with zero latency.

Setup:

  1. Download and install BlackHole (2ch version is sufficient for stereo)
  2. Open Audio MIDI Setup (built into macOS). Create a Multi-Output Device that includes both your real speakers/headphones and BlackHole
  3. Set your DAW's output to the Multi-Output Device. You hear audio through your speakers AND BlackHole receives the signal
  4. In Zoom, go to Settings > Audio. Set the microphone to BlackHole. Zoom now picks up your DAW audio as its input
  5. Set up Zoom's "Share Computer Sound" option when screen sharing for an additional route

Result: The student hears your DAW output through the call. You hear it through your headphones. Voice chat still works normally through a separate mic input.

Windows: Voicemeeter

Voicemeeter is a free virtual audio mixer for Windows. It routes audio between applications and hardware with flexibility.

Setup:

  1. Download and install Voicemeeter Banana (the most versatile version)
  2. Set your DAW's ASIO output to Voicemeeter Input
  3. In Voicemeeter, route that input to both your physical output (speakers/headphones) and a virtual output
  4. In Zoom, set the microphone input to Voicemeeter Output. Zoom picks up the DAW signal
  5. In your DAW, use a separate input for your physical microphone so your voice is also routed through Voicemeeter to the call

This setup takes 30-60 minutes to configure correctly the first time. Do it before your first student session, not during.

Alternative for both Mac and Windows: Zoom's "Share Computer Sound" option during screen sharing captures your system audio and sends it to students. This is simpler but can cause feedback loops if not managed carefully. Use it as a backup, not your primary routing solution.

Structuring a Production Lesson

A 60-minute production lesson works well with this structure:

Minutes 0-5: Project review Ask the student to pull up what they worked on since the last session. Listen while they play it back. Take notes. Do not interrupt. Let them hear it with you before the critique starts.

Minutes 5-15: Introduce the new concept One concept per lesson. EQ, compression, reverb, sidechaining, sound design, arrangement. Introduce it with context: why this matters, when producers use it, what problem it solves.

Minutes 15-30: Live demonstration Show the concept in your DAW. Walk through it step by step. Explain what you are adjusting and why. Use a practice session, not a project you want to finish. Distractions from the lesson topic break the student's focus.

Minutes 30-45: Student applies the concept Student shares their screen. They apply what you just showed on their own project or a practice file you provide. You watch and guide. You do not take over their mouse. You describe what to do and let them execute. The hands-on practice under supervision is where the learning actually sticks.

Minutes 45-55: Review and feedback Student plays back their work. Give specific feedback on two things only. "Your low shelf is cutting too aggressively on the kick, back it off to -2dB" is useful. "It sounds a bit off" is not.

Minutes 55-60: Homework and next session Set one specific practice goal: "Create a new session with just a drum loop and practice parallel compression on the kick using the technique from today. Bounce it and send it to me." This gives you something to start next week's lesson with.

  • Use a second monitor. Put your DAW on your main screen (shared with the student) and the video call on your second screen. You can see the student's face and your content simultaneously.

Assignments and Project Feedback

Production lessons need homework with a feedback loop. Without it, students work without direction and come back having practiced the wrong things.

Effective homework formats:

  • "Recreate this drum pattern from memory and bounce it as a WAV. Send it to me by Friday."
  • "Take the session from today and add three more elements using the synthesis technique we covered. No additional samples."
  • "Start a new session from scratch using only the sounds built into [DAW]. Arrange it to at least 2 minutes. Send the project file."

Project file sharing: Use Google Drive, Dropbox, or Splice for file exchange. Ask for both the project file and a bounce. The project file lets you see the decisions the student made. The bounce tells you what it actually sounds like.

Timestamped feedback: If a student sends a bounced mix, use Feedtracks or SoundCloud's private link with timed comments. Feedback at 0:32 "the kick is competing with the bass here" is more useful than a paragraph of general notes.
