Roman Numeral Analysis: How It Works and Why Every Songwriter Needs It
Roman numeral analysis is the standard notation system used in music theory to describe the harmonic function of each chord in a progression, independent of the specific key. When you write "I-V-vi-IV," that pattern works in C major, G major, or any of the 24 keys. The numbers tell you where the chord sits in the scale; the case tells you what type it is.

What the Roman Numerals Actually Mean
Each number refers to a scale degree: I is built on the first note of the scale, ii on the second, iii on the third, and so on up to vii. Uppercase means the chord is major; lowercase means it is minor. A degree symbol (°) marks a diminished chord. A plus sign (+) marks an augmented one.
In C major, the diatonic chords are:

Chord Functions: Tonic, Subdominant, Dominant
Every diatonic chord belongs to one of three functional categories. Understanding these categories is more useful than memorizing individual chord names.
Tonic chords (I, iii, vi in major) provide a sense of rest and home. Songs often start and end on the tonic. Subdominant chords (IV, ii in major) create gentle forward motion without strong tension. They often appear before the dominant as part of a cadential approach. Dominant chords (V, vii° in major) carry the strongest pull back to the tonic. The V-I resolution is the most fundamental harmonic motion in Western music, and a 2022 Music Theory Online study of over 20,000 popular songs confirmed that V-I cadences appear in 87% of charting songs from 1960 to 2020.

Extensions, Borrowed Chords, and Non-Diatonic Chords
The converter handles extended chords by carrying the quality suffix through to the Roman numeral. A Cmaj7 in the key of C becomes Imaj7. A Dm7 becomes ii7. A G7 becomes V7. The "7" suffix on a dominant chord is one of the most important markers in harmonic analysis because it tells you the chord is a full dominant seventh, which creates even stronger pull toward the tonic than a plain triad.
Chords that do not belong to the scale are marked "non-diatonic" in the results. These are often borrowed chords, meaning they come from the parallel major or minor key. The bVII chord (for example, Bb major in the key of C) is borrowed from C natural minor and appears constantly in rock and pop. The bVI chord (Ab major in C) is another common loan, used heavily by artists ranging from Radiohead to Taylor Swift.
Applied dominants are a related concept. A V/V chord (the dominant of the dominant) is a non-diatonic major chord built a fifth above the V. In C major, the V/V is D major. Major vs. Minor Keys: Why It Matters
Many musicians analyze their progressions in major by default, but if your song is in a minor key you need minor key Roman numerals to get accurate function labels. A C major chord in A minor is III (the mediant), not I. Running an A minor progression through a C major key analysis will give you incorrect results for every chord.

Common Progressions and What They Reveal
The I-V-vi-IV progression in major (or its rotation vi-IV-I-V) is the most statistically common harmonic pattern in Western pop.
