Processes

Nomination Process

Record labels, artists, and distributors submit entries to MAHASZ. For the 2026 ceremony, over 1,300 submissions were received across 18 categories. A 25-member professional jury of music industry experts, journalists, and musicians selects nominees and winners.

Voting Process

The 25-member jury evaluates submissions in two rounds. The first round produces nominees across all 18 categories. The second round selects winners. The Recording of the Year category is decided by public vote through the Song of the Year campaign. The MAHASZ board separately selects Lifetime Achievement recipients.

The Fonogram Awards (Fonogram Magyar Zenei Dij) are Hungary's national music prizes, presented annually by MAHASZ (the Hungarian Recording Industry Association) since 1992. Originally called the Golden Giraffe Awards, the ceremony was rebranded as the Fonogram Awards in 2003. It recognizes outstanding achievements in both Hungarian and international music across 18 categories, making it the Hungarian equivalent of the Grammy Awards.

How the Fonogram Awards Work

MAHASZ, founded in 1992, organizes the ceremony. The process works as follows:

  1. Submissions: Record labels, artists, and distributors submit entries to MAHASZ. For the 2026 ceremony, over 1,300 submissions were received. The eligibility period covers releases from the previous calendar year.
  2. Jury Selection: A 25-member professional jury of music industry experts, journalists, and musicians evaluates submissions. The jury changes each year to reflect diversity across genres, gender, age, and ethnicity.
  3. Voting: The jury votes in two rounds. The first round produces nominees across all 18 categories. The second round selects winners.
  4. Public Vote: The Recording of the Year category is decided by public vote through MAHASZ's Song of the Year campaign, separate from the jury process.
  5. Lifetime Achievement: The MAHASZ board separately selects Lifetime Achievement recipients. The 2026 honorees were 100 Folk Celsius, Tolcsvay Laszlo, Dresch Mihaly, and Joos Istvan.

The 18 categories span both Hungarian and international divisions across genres including classic pop-rock, modern pop-rock, alternative/indie rock, electronic music, rap/hip-hop, hard rock/metal, traditional pop, contemporary entertainment, children's music, jazz, and world/folk music. Plus Discovery of the Year and Recording of the Year.

Real-World Example: Fonogram 2026

The 23rd Fonogram ceremony took place on March 31, 2026, at Barabas Villa in Budapest. Ivan & The Parazol won their third Fonogram award for Hungarian Classic Pop-Rock Album with "Belle Epoque / Dorodango." Mehringer took Hungarian Modern Pop-Rock Album with "EDEN." Deva won Hungarian Electronic Music Album with "Avar." bongor won Hungarian Rap/Hip-Hop Album with "EXTAZIS."

Nagy Bogi was named Discovery of the Year for 2025. Ruzsa Magdolna and Lotfi Begi won Recording of the Year through the public vote for "Nyari zapor." On the international side, ROSALIA won for "LUX," Tyler, The Creator won for "DON'T TAP THE GLASS," Robyn won for "Dopamine," and Wolf Alice won for "The Clearing."

Four Lifetime Achievement awards were presented to 100 Folk Celsius, Tolcsvay Laszlo, Dresch Mihaly, and Joos Istvan for their contributions to Hungarian music.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

The Fonogram Awards offer Hungarian artists a national platform that international ceremonies cannot provide. 16 of the 18 categories are dedicated to Hungarian artists, meaning you compete only against domestic releases rather than global superstars. The Discovery of the Year category specifically targets emerging talent, and the public-voted Recording of the Year gives artists with engaged fanbases a direct path to winning.

If you are a Hungarian artist or producer, submit your releases through your label or distributor to MAHASZ. Even a nomination increases streaming numbers and booking interest within Hungary. Independent artists who build streaming numbers and radio play during the eligibility period automatically qualify for consideration. Check the Fonogram website for submission deadlines and eligibility rules.
