AGO Scholarships are awards funded by the American Guild of Organists (AGO) for organ students and church musicians at undergraduate and graduate levels. The AGO is the national professional association serving the organ and choral music fields, with over 12,000 members across 275 chapters in the United States, Asia, and Australia. Scholarship amounts range from $10,000 to $34,000 across four distinct programs.

How AGO Scholarships Work

The AGO administers four scholarship programs, each with different eligibility requirements and award amounts:

Pogorzelski-Yankee Organ Scholar Program

This program offers emerging organists under the age of 30 a ten-month internship within a significant music ministry program in the United States. For the 2026-27 academic year, the scholar will be hosted by St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville, Tennessee. The package includes:

  • $34,000 salary
  • $3,000 housing stipend
  • Health insurance

This is the most financially substantial AGO award and provides both training and professional income simultaneously.

Pogorzelski-Yankee Scholarships

Two scholarships of $15,000 per year are awarded to students enrolled full-time in a nationally or regionally accredited undergraduate institution (college, university, or conservatory) during the 2026-27 academic year. Applicants must demonstrate verifiable financial need and show a desire to commit a significant portion of the two years following graduation to teaching, performing, or other serious work related to the organ. Past recipients may reapply, but renewal is not guaranteed.

Salisbury Scholarships

Two annual scholarships of $10,000 each support full-time graduate students developing as performers, conductors, or academics in sacred music. One award goes to a master's student and one to a doctoral student, for a total annual distribution of $20,000. For the 2026-27 academic year, the AGO accepts applications from qualified candidates at either level. Applicants must demonstrate financial need. Past recipients may reapply.

Pipe Organ Encounter (POE) Scholarships

These scholarships support youth participants (ages 13-18) attending the AGO's Pipe Organ Encounters program. They are not competitive and are awarded based on financial need only. Adults in the POE+ and POETech programs are not eligible. Applications for 2027 scholarships will be available in November 2026.

Real-World Example

A 22-year-old organist accepted into a Bachelor of Music program at an accredited conservatory for the 2026-27 academic year could apply for the Pogorzelski-Yankee Scholarship. If selected, they would receive $15,000 for the year, which could cover a substantial portion of tuition at many state universities. If they also demonstrate exceptional promise and are under 30, they could alternatively be selected for the Organ Scholar Program, receiving a $34,000 salary plus housing and health insurance for a ten-month residency at St. George's Episcopal Church in Nashville.

A doctoral student focusing on sacred music performance could apply for the Salisbury Scholarship. The $10,000 award could fund research travel, conference attendance, or tuition not covered by a graduate assistantship.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

The AGO scholarship programs are among the most generous in the organ and church music world. Unlike many music scholarships that offer $1,000 to $3,000, the AGO's awards reach $15,000 to $34,000, which can meaningfully reduce or eliminate tuition costs.

If you are an organist under 30, the Organ Scholar Program is worth serious consideration. It provides professional income, health insurance, and real-world experience in a music ministry setting. This combination of salary and training is rare in music education.

For undergraduate and graduate students, apply to both the Pogorzelski-Yankee and Salisbury programs if you meet the criteria. The AGO also offers National Convention Scholarships for young organists to attend the biennial National Convention, which covers registration costs and provides networking access to leading organists and church music directors.

Applications for 2027 scholarships will be available in November 2026. The 2027-28 Salisbury guidelines will be available in March 2027. Plan ahead and gather your financial documentation early.
