BMI Foundation Awards are annual scholarships and competitions for aspiring songwriters and composers, administered by the BMI Foundation. The Foundation offers multiple award programs with individual prizes ranging from $5,000 to $20,000. Over the past twenty years, the John Lennon Award alone has distributed more than $400,000 in scholarships to young musicians across the United States. The 2026 application deadline for most programs is January 15, 2026.
How BMI Foundation Awards Work
The BMI Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable organization that operates separately from BMI (the performing rights organization). It funds scholarships, awards, workshops, and education programs through contributions from BMI members and music lovers. All awards are by application, and each program has its own eligibility requirements and judging criteria.
Major Award Programs for 2026
- John Lennon Award: Three scholarships totaling $20,000 for the best original songs in contemporary genres (alternative, pop, rock, indie, electronica, R&B, experimental). Established in 1997 by Yoko Ono. Applicants must be ages 17 to 24 as of February 15, 2026, and reside in the United States. Deadline: January 15, 2026.
- Dolly Parton Songwriters Award: $20,000 total for up to two of the best original songs in Americana, blues, bluegrass, contemporary Christian, country, folk, or roots. Formerly the Nashville Songwriting Scholarship, renamed with support from Sony Music Publishing's Rusty Gaston and Luke Combs. Same age and residency requirements. Deadline: January 15, 2026.
- peermusic Latin Music Award: A competition for Latin music songwriters. Same eligibility requirements as other programs.
- BMI Composer Awards: For concert music composers. Judged by a panel of professional composers.
- Pete Carpenter Fellowship: A fellowship for aspiring film and television composers, including a residency opportunity.
- Babyface Award: For emerging songwriters and producers.
- Chris Trousdale Dream Awards: For young performers and dancers.
- Kavi Ohri Memorial Award: A memorial award for emerging musicians.
General Eligibility Rules
Across all BMI Foundation award programs:
- Applicants must be between 17 and 24 years old as of February 15, 2026
- Must reside in the United States or its territories
- May submit only one application per program
- May not submit the same work to multiple programs
- Works must not be assigned to any major music publisher or record label
- Previous winners may not apply again to the same program (honorable mention recipients may reapply)
- Co-written works limited to 3 total writers, all of whom must meet eligibility requirements
Real-World Example
A 20-year-old songwriter studying at a US college could submit an original pop song to the John Lennon Award competition. If selected as one of the three winners, they would receive a share of the $20,000 total award pool. The winning songs are judged by a panel of music publishers, songwriters, musicians, and executives, and the award is announced publicly by BMI, building industry visibility.
A country-folk songwriter could submit an original Americana song to the Dolly Parton Songwriters Award. If selected as one of up to two winners, they would receive a portion of the $20,000 award. Unlike tuition-restricted scholarships, this award can be used as a career grant for study, instrument purchase, recording costs, or other professional expenses.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
The BMI Foundation offers more open-application award programs for young songwriters and composers than almost any other US music organization. If you are between 17 and 24 and writing original songs, there is likely a program matched to your genre.
Key advantages:
- Awards are not restricted to tuition. You can use the money for recording, equipment, or career development.
- You retain ownership of your songs. The only restriction is that works cannot be assigned to a major publisher or label.
- Winning builds industry credibility. BMI publicly announces winners, which can lead to publishing deals and industry connections.
- You can apply to multiple programs simultaneously, as long as you submit different songs to each.
Check the BMI Foundation website each fall for updated deadlines. Most programs have a January 15 deadline, with winners announced in spring 2026.
