Chamber Music America (CMA) Grants are project-based funding awards for professional chamber ensembles and presenters based in New York City. CMA runs several grant programs covering commissioning, community engagement, and ensemble development. The most accessible program is Ensemble Forward, which provides $10,000 grants for ensembles to work with business consultants on organizational development. Other programs include Artistic Projects (community-engaged chamber music), New Jazz Works (commissioning new jazz compositions), and Classical Commissioning. Most CMA grants require the ensemble to be based in one of the five boroughs of New York City, with at least one member being a US citizen or permanent resident.
Application Details
CMA operates several distinct grant programs with different deadlines and requirements:
Ensemble Forward
Grants of $10,000 for ensembles to work with a business consultant on organizational assessment and planning. The program funds 100% of eligible expenses with no matching funds required. Applications were due September 25, 2025, with award notifications in late December. The grant period runs from January through December. Ensembles must perform Western European classical and/or contemporary chamber music and be based in New York City.
Artistic Projects
Grants for NYC-based ensembles and presenters to create artist-generated projects with community impact. Projects must include public performances and demonstrate community engagement. Ensembles must consist of 2 to 10 professional musicians with an annual operating budget under $250,000. Funded by the Doris Duke Foundation.
New Jazz Works
Commissioning grants for jazz ensembles to create and perform new works. Part of CMA's longstanding jazz support programs, currently funded through the Empowerment for Impact and Growth program supported by the Doris Duke Foundation.
Classical Commissioning
Grants for ensembles to commission new classical chamber works from US-based composers. The commissioned composer must provide proof of US residency or permanent green card status.

Potential Drawbacks
- Geographic restriction: Most CMA grants are limited to NYC-based ensembles. If your ensemble is based anywhere else in the US, you are ineligible.
- Genre restrictions: Ensemble Forward is limited to Western European classical and/or contemporary chamber music. Jazz ensembles must apply through New Jazz Works or Empowerment for Impact and Growth instead.
- No student ensembles: Only professional ensembles are eligible. Recent conservatory graduates can apply, but currently enrolled student groups cannot.
- One grant at a time: Ensembles can only have one CMA grant open at a time. Prior grantees must complete their project and submit a final report before applying again.
- Budget cap: Ensembles with annual operating budgets over $250,000 are excluded.
- Competitive: CMA grants are reviewed by independent panels. Not all applicants receive funding.
- Opera and choral exclusion: Ensembles whose primary focus is opera, choral works, or incidental music for other media are ineligible.
Real-World Example
A string quartet based in Brooklyn (all four members are conservatory graduates) wants to develop a sustainable business model. They apply for an Ensemble Forward grant in September 2025. Their application includes a proposal to work with an arts management consultant to create a five-year strategic plan, develop a board structure, and establish a fundraising strategy. The quartet submits audio recordings of a recent performance, a budget showing how the $10,000 will cover consultant fees, and bios for all members.
If awarded, they receive $10,000 with no matching requirement. The grant period runs from January through December 2026. They attend two Learning Residentials (in-person workshops) during the grant period. The consultant helps them register as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, set up a board, and create a donor management system. By the end of the grant, the quartet has a formal organizational structure and a fundraising plan.
