Sphinx Organization is a Detroit-based nonprofit founded in 1996 by Aaron Dwork that transforms lives through the power of diversity in the arts. Sphinx is the leading US organization dedicated to developing young Black and Latino classical musicians through a pipeline of programs spanning education, artist development, performing artists, and arts leadership. Its flagship Sphinx Competition awards a $50,000 Robert Frederick Smith Prize to the senior division winner, and the organization has built partnerships with 117 orchestras through the National Alliance for Audition Support (NAAS).

How Sphinx Programs Work

Sphinx operates a four-pillar pipeline: Education and Access, Artist Development, Performing Artists, and Arts Leadership. Each pillar contains specific programs with distinct eligibility and application processes.

Education and Access

  • Sphinx Overture: Year-round beginner-level instrumental instruction in Detroit and Flint, MI. Free program for young students starting their musical journey.
  • Sphinx Performance Academy (SPA): National summer intensives for young artists ages 11 to 17. Full scholarship program for solo and chamber music performance, wellness, and citizenship training.

Artist Development

  • Sphinx Competition: The flagship annual competition for young Black and Latino string musicians. Divisions include Junior (under 18) and Senior (18 to 30). Winners receive cash prizes and performance opportunities.
  • Robert Frederick Smith Prize: A $50,000 award bestowed upon the senior winner of the Sphinx Competition Senior Division. This is one of the largest prizes for young classical musicians in the US.
  • Sphinx Orchestral Partners Auditions: Professional audition and advancement experience connecting musicians with orchestral partners.
  • National Alliance for Audition Support (NAAS): A partnership with the League of American Orchestras, New World Symphony, and 117 orchestras and their unions. NAAS provides preparation, support, and placement assistance while addressing systemic obstacles to representation in orchestral music.

Performing Artists

  • Sphinx Virtuosi: A professional chamber orchestra comprised of Sphinx alumni, touring nationally.
  • Sphinx Symphony Orchestra: A professional orchestra of top Black and Latino musicians from across the country.
  • Catalyst Quartet and Harlem Quartet: Professional string quartets dedicated to diverse repertoire and engaging new audiences.
  • Sphinx Soloist Program: Showcases Sphinx Competition winners through featured performances with orchestras.
  • Sphinx Global Scholars: Brings Sphinx artists abroad for teaching, learning, and performing internationally.
  • EXIGENCE Vocal Ensemble: A professional vocal ensemble addressing the historic lack of representation in classical vocal music.

Arts Leadership

  • SphinxConnect: An annual global convening for artists and leaders committed to addressing systemic obstacles in Black and Latino communities.
  • MPower Artist Grants: Competitive scholarships designed to empower Sphinx alumni in their career development.
  • Sphinx Medals of Excellence: The highest honor bestowed by Sphinx Organization, recognizing extraordinary classical musicians with a $50,000 career grant.
  • Sphinx LEAD: A two-year leadership program designed to empower the next generation of executive leaders in the arts.

Real-World Example

A 17-year-old Black violinist applies to the Sphinx Performance Academy, a full-scholarship summer intensive. They attend SPA, receive coaching from professional musicians, and gain chamber music experience. At 19, they enter the Sphinx Competition Senior Division. If they win, they receive the $50,000 Robert Frederick Smith Prize plus soloist performance opportunities with major orchestras through the Sphinx Soloist Program.

A 25-year-old Latino cellist and Sphinx Competition alumnus applies for an MPower Artist Grant to fund a debut recording project. The competitive grant covers recording costs, and the album release builds their professional profile. They also join the NAAS program, which provides audition preparation coaching and connects them with 117 partner orchestras for audition opportunities.

A 30-year-old Black conductor applies to Sphinx LEAD, the two-year leadership program. They receive mentorship, professional development, and networking opportunities designed to prepare them for executive leadership roles in arts organizations.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

Sphinx is the only major US organization building a complete pipeline for Black and Latino classical musicians, from beginner instruction through professional career development. If you are a young Black or Latino string player, the Sphinx Competition is the single most direct path to national recognition and substantial prize money. The $50,000 Robert Frederick Smith Prize is among the largest awards available to young classical musicians.

If you are beyond competition age but still building your career, MPower Artist Grants are available exclusively to Sphinx alumni. This means participating in any Sphinx program (SPA, Competition, Virtuosi, etc.) opens the door to future grant funding.

For musicians seeking orchestral positions, NAAS is the most targeted support system available. With 117 partner orchestras, NAAS addresses the specific barriers that Black and Latino musicians face in orchestral auditions, including preparation coaching, financial support for travel to auditions, and direct connections with orchestra partners.

Sphinx programs are almost entirely full-scholarship or grant-based, meaning participants do not pay to participate. The organization is based in Detroit but programs are national and international in scope.
