View EventsThe Electric Ballroom is a 1,500-capacity music venue at 184 Camden High Street in Camden Town, London. Originally opened as the Buffalo Club in 1938 by Bill Fuller, it was renamed Electric Ballroom in 1978. It has hosted performances by U2, The Clash, Joy Division, Prince, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, and Ed Sheeran across its 80-plus year history.
History and Architecture
The venue began in 1938 when Bill Fuller took over a small Irish club on Kentish Town Road. An expansion opportunity came in 1941 when Camden Town tube station was bombed during World War II, destroying the back of the building and the adjacent Dewsbury Terrace. Fuller bought the entire site and rebuilt the venue to hold 2,000 people. It became a social center for Irish immigrants, hosting performers like Jim Reeves.
In 1978, with help from Frank Murray (Thin Lizzy's former tour manager), the venue was relaunched as a rock club. The Electric Ballroom opened on July 28, 1978, with The Greedies, a supergroup featuring Phil Lynott, members of the Sex Pistols, and Rainbow. Two weeks later, Sid Vicious played a one-off show with the Vicious White Kids, billed as "Sid Sods Off," raising airfare for his move to America.
The venue closed after nine months due to noise complaints but reopened in 1979 with a 2-Tone evening featuring The Specials, Dexy's Midnight Runners, Madness, and The Selecter. The 1980s brought performances from The Cramps, U2, The Smiths, and Nick Cave. In 1985, The Jesus and Mary Chain played a chaotic gig that ended with police storming the venue.
The building has two dance floors and four bars. The ground floor has a stage and full concert facilities. Transport for London twice proposed demolishing the Electric Ballroom to redevelop Camden Town Underground station, but both plans were rejected.
Notable Performances and Current Programming
The Electric Ballroom has hosted Joy Division, Ramones, Iggy Pop, Muse, Public Enemy, Blur, The Killers, and Prince. More recent performers include Harry Styles, Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Skrillex with Fred Again and Four Tet, Wet Leg, and Idles.
The venue remains active in 2026 with a packed schedule. Upcoming events include performances by Snail Mail, Molotov, Soulfly, Sevendust, and the Jayhawks. PROGRESS Wrestling holds regular events at the venue. The Friday club night "Sin City" plays rock and alternative music, while Saturday's "Shake" features pop, dance, and hip-hop.
