The Blues Music Awards (BMAs) are the highest honor in blues music, presented annually by The Blues Foundation in Memphis, Tennessee. Established in 1980 as the W.C. Handy Awards (renamed Blues Music Awards in 2006), the ceremony recognizes outstanding achievement in blues performance and recording across 25 categories voted on by Foundation members.
How the Blues Music Awards Work
The Blues Foundation was founded in Memphis in 1980 by its first executive director Joe Savarin. The first National Blues Awards were held at the Orpheum Theatre on November 16, 1980. The awards were originally called the W.C. Handy Awards, honoring W.C. Handy, the "Father of the Blues." In 2006, the Foundation renamed them the Blues Music Awards to broaden public recognition. The Foundation has grown from a small Memphis base to an international membership of over 4,000 individuals and organizations.
The nomination process involves close to 100 blues industry experts who act as nominators. They select five finalists in each of 25 categories. The submission process opens in July each year. Winners are then determined by a vote of The Blues Foundation membership, which includes musicians, fans, industry professionals, and affiliated blues societies worldwide.
Categories span performance and recording achievements. Major categories include B.B. King Entertainer of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Emerging Artist Album. Genre-specific categories cover Acoustic Blues, Traditional Blues, Soul Blues, Contemporary Blues, and Blues Rock. The awards also recognize instrumentalists across guitar, piano, bass, drums, harmonica, horn, and vocals, plus an International Blues Album category.
The 47th annual Blues Music Awards took place on May 7, 2026, at the Cannon Center for the Performing Arts in Memphis. Ronnie Baker Brooks won B.B. King Entertainer of the Year. D.K. Harrell won Album of the Year for "Talkin' Heavy." Tommy Castro and Christoffer Andersen won Song of the Year for "Can't Catch a Break." Derek Trucks won Instrumentalist (Guitar), Billy Branch won Instrumentalist (Harmonica), and Marcia Ball won the Pinetop Perkins Piano Player award. Curtis Salgado won Soul Blues Male Artist, and Thornetta Davis won Soul Blues Female Artist. John Primer won Traditional Blues Male Artist, and Eden Brent won the Koko Taylor Award for Traditional Blues Female Artist.
Real-World Example
D.K. Harrell's 2026 Album of the Year win for "Talkin' Heavy" demonstrates how the Blues Music Awards can elevate an emerging artist. Harrell was not a household name before the album, but the award confirmed what blues insiders already knew: he is one of the genre's strongest rising voices. Winning Album of the Year at the BMAs directly impacts an artist's touring career. Blues festival bookers and venue promoters use BMA wins as a quality signal when selecting acts. An artist who wins B.B. King Entertainer of the Year can expect a 20 to 40 percent increase in festival booking fees the following year. For independent blues artists, a BMA nomination alone (being one of five finalists) adds significant credibility to press kits and booking proposals.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
The Blues Music Awards are uniquely accessible to independent artists. Unlike the Grammys or Billboard awards, the BMAs operate within a smaller, community-driven ecosystem. The Blues Foundation's membership includes blues societies from around the world, and any member can vote. Independent blues artists who release quality recordings and build relationships within the blues community can earn nominations.
If you are an independent blues artist, join The Blues Foundation and submit your recordings during the open submission period (starting July 6, 2026). Affiliated blues societies can sponsor your work for consideration. Focus on categories like Best Emerging Artist Album if you are early in your career. Use our Streaming Royalty Calculator to track your digital performance, and read our guide on how to network in the music industry to build relationships with blues society members and nominators. For touring strategy, our touring internationally as an independent artist guide covers how to build the live performance track record that BMA voters reward. The International Blues Challenge is another Blues Foundation program that feeds directly into BMA recognition.
