Processes

Nomination Process

Eligibility is based on UK chart performance and streaming data during a defined eligibility period. The BPI and an awards committee shortlist nominees across categories. Two categories (Song of the Year and International Song of the Year) are voted by the public via WhatsApp through a partnership with Meta.

Voting Process

Most categories are decided by a voting academy of approximately 1,000 music industry professionals, including artists, managers, publishers, and media. Song of the Year and International Song of the Year are fan-voted via WhatsApp.

The BRIT Awards is the UK's biggest annual pop music awards ceremony, organized by the British Phonographic Industry (BPI) to recognize commercial and artistic achievement in British and international music. The 2026 ceremony took place on February 28 at Co-op Live in Manchester, marking the first time the awards were held outside London. Olivia Dean won four awards, including Artist of the Year and Mastercard Album of the Year for "The Art of Loving."

Submission and Eligibility Details

The BRIT Awards do not have an open submission process. Eligibility is determined by UK chart performance, streaming data, and album sales during a defined eligibility period (typically December to December). The BPI awards committee and music industry figures shortlist nominees across categories.

Key eligibility points:

  • Artists must have had commercial releases in the UK during the eligibility period
  • The Mastercard Album of the Year category requires UK album releases within the eligibility window
  • Song of the Year and International Song of the Year are voted by the public via WhatsApp through a partnership with Meta
  • Producer of the Year and Songwriter of the Year are announced ahead of the ceremony
  • The Critics' Choice award highlights emerging British talent, voted by a panel of music critics and editors
  • There is no application fee or submission cost for artists

Key Benefits for Artists

  • Commercial impact: Winning or being nominated typically drives a measurable spike in UK streaming numbers and album sales. Olivia Dean's "Man I Need" stayed in the UK Top 10 for months following her 2026 wins.
  • Industry validation: A BRIT Award is recognized by labels, booking agents, and promoters as a signal of commercial viability and cultural relevance in the UK market.
  • Performance exposure: The ceremony is broadcast live on ITV1 and streamed globally, giving artists exposure to millions of viewers. The 2026 show featured performances from Harry Styles, ROSALIA (with a surprise appearance from Bjork), Wolf Alice, and Raye.
  • Career milestones: The Critics' Choice award has previously gone to Adele, Sam Fender, and Florence + the Machine, all of whom went on to major commercial success.
  • Producer and Songwriter recognition: These behind-the-scenes categories give non-performing creators public visibility. PinkPantheress became the first woman and youngest person to win Producer of the Year in 2026.

Potential Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • No open submission: Independent artists cannot directly submit their work. Eligibility depends on chart performance and industry recognition, which favors label-backed releases with marketing budgets.
  • UK-centric eligibility: The awards primarily recognize UK chart performance. International artists are limited to two categories (International Artist and International Song), both of which are highly competitive.
  • Academy voting bias: The voting academy of approximately 1,000 industry professionals can favor established names and major label acts. Independent and niche genre artists are often underrepresented in nominations.
  • Category consolidation: The BRITs merged several gendered categories into gender-neutral ones starting in 2022. Some artists and critics have argued this reduces the number of total winners and recognition opportunities.
  • Ceremony costs: Attending the ceremony and associated after-parties involves significant costs for independent artists, including travel, styling, and accommodation.
