Processes
Nomination Process
A jury of Bollywood music industry experts, chaired by lyricist Javed Akhtar, selects nominees and winners across film, indie, raag, and technical categories. Jury members include composers, playback singers, lyricists, and directors like Kavita Krishnamurthy, Ramesh Sippy, Lalit Pandit, Raftaar, Papon, Shekhar Ravjiani, and Leslie Lewis.
Voting Process
Most categories are decided by the jury panel. The Listener's Choice categories (Song, Album, and Indie Song of the Year) are determined by public voting through Radio Mirchi's platforms. The awards are the only Indian music awards platform that credits original singers in recreated songs.

How the Mirchi Music Awards Work
Radio Mirchi, operated by Entertainment Network India Limited (ENIL), runs the Mirchi Music Awards. The awards were instituted to recognize the best of 2008, with the first ceremony held on March 28, 2009. They are the only Indian music awards that credit original singers in recreated songs, distinguishing them from other Bollywood awards.
The jury system is the backbone of the selection process. Javed Akhtar, poet and lyricist, serves as the permanent chairman. The jury includes composers, playback singers, lyricists, and directors such as Kavita Krishnamurthy, Ramesh Sippy, Lalit Pandit, Raftaar, Papon, Shekhar Ravjiani, and Leslie Lewis. This panel selects nominees and winners across film, indie, raag, technical, and special jury categories.
Awards are organized into six groups: Film, Indies, Raag, Technical, Special Jury, and Listener's Choice. The Film category includes Album of the Year, Song of the Year, and upcoming talent awards for composers, lyricists, and vocalists. The Technical category recognizes sound engineers, mixing, programming, and background score. The Listener's Choice categories are the only public-voted awards, determined through Radio Mirchi's listener platforms.
Regional editions expand the awards beyond Hindi film music. Mirchi Music Awards South launched in 2010 to honor Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Malayalam film music. Mirchi Music Awards Bangla launched in 2012 for Bengali music. These regional editions follow the same jury-based selection model.
Real-World Example: 16th Mirchi Music Awards (2024)
The 16th edition took place on December 12, 2024, in Mumbai. The ceremony celebrated Indian music across film, indie, raag, technical, and listener's choice categories.
In the Film category, "Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar" won Album of the Year, featuring vocals from Arijit Singh, Shreya Ghoshal, Jubin Nautiyal, and Sunidhi Chauhan. Vishal-Shekhar won for their compositions. In the Listener's Choice categories, the album "Animal" won Listener's Choice Album of the Year, and "Phir Aur Kya Chahiye" from "Zara Hatke Zara Bachke" won Listener's Choice Song of the Year, sung by Arijit Singh with music by Sachin-Jigar and lyrics by Amitabh Bhattacharya.
On the independent music front, "Labon Se Baat" by Shekhar Ravjiani, Madhubanti Bagchi, and Rishabh Sharma won Indie Song of the Year. Darshan Raval's "Mahiye Jinna Sohna" won Listener's Choice Indie Song of the Year. "Rut Badle" by Om Bongane won Raag Inspired Song of the Year, recognizing classical music influences in contemporary songs.
Yatish Mehrishi, CEO of ENIL, stated that the awards celebrate diverse music from golden-era classics to chart-toppers and emerging talent, maintaining standards of fairness and inclusivity.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
The Mirchi Music Awards are one of the few Indian music awards that dedicate categories to independent (non-film) music. The Indie Song of the Year and Listener's Choice Indie Song of the Year categories give independent artists a national platform alongside Bollywood composers and playback singers. Darshan Raval's win for "Mahiye Jinna Sohna" shows that independent releases can compete with film music for listener votes.
The Raag Inspired Song of the Year category recognizes artists who blend classical Indian music with contemporary production. This creates a pathway for artists working in fusion, classical-crossover, or folk-inspired genres to receive industry recognition.
The Upcoming Music Composer, Lyricist, and Vocalist categories specifically target emerging talent. If you are an independent composer or singer working in Hindi film music or indie music, these categories provide a career-launching platform. The jury-based selection means your work is evaluated by industry veterans, not just popularity metrics.
If you are an independent Indian artist, submit your work to Radio Mirchi for airplay consideration and build listener engagement for the Listener's Choice categories.
