AI Music Policy

Not publicly stated.

UnitedMasters is a US-based digital music distributor founded in 2018 by Steve Stoute, a former Sony Music executive. It offers a genuinely different pitch from other distributors: distribution plus a brand partnership pipeline that connects independent artists to the NBA, NFL, and consumer brands like State Farm and American Eagle. Artists keep ownership of their masters on every tier. The free Debut tier lets you start with no upfront cost (UnitedMasters keeps 10%), while the $19.99/year Debut+ plan undercuts DistroKid and TuneCore with 100% royalty retention.

Pricing and Plans

UnitedMasters runs four tiers, verified on unitedmasters.com in August 2026:

  • Debut (Free): UnitedMasters keeps 10% of royalties. Music is not distributed to any streaming services on this tier. You can receive Split Pay royalties if added by another artist and act as a team member. This is essentially a free account with no distribution.
  • Debut+ ($19.99/year): Unlimited releases to 150+ music services, 100% royalty retention, Blueprint AI credits, analytics, MasterLinks (smart links), daily trend reports. This is the cheapest 100%-royalty unlimited distribution plan among major distributors.
  • Select ($59.99/year): Everything in Debut+ plus exclusive brand and sync deal access, 2 mastered tracks per month, monthly Blueprint Live sessions, playlist pitching. This is where the brand partnership pipeline opens up.
  • Partner (Invite-only): Negotiated terms. Hands-on artist services from the in-house team, dedicated artist relations support, global marketing, hand-picked brand and sync deals, advances.

The Brand Partnership Pipeline

This is UnitedMasters' main differentiator. On the Select plan, artists can pitch their music for brand partnership opportunities through the Exclusives tab. Past partnerships have included:

  • NBA game placements
  • NFL content
  • State Farm campaigns
  • American Eagle brand deals
  • Video game soundtracks

The brand deal upside is real but reaches only a small share of the roster. Most Select artists will not land a major brand deal. The pipeline exists, but it is competitive. UnitedMasters reports that partnerships with the NBA, State Farm, and American Eagle surged one artist's streams 5x, but this is a best-case scenario, not the average.

The Debut Tier Trap

The free Debut tier is misleading. It does not distribute your music to any streaming services. It is a free account that lets you receive Split Pay royalties from other artists and act as a team member. If you want actual distribution, you need Debut+ at minimum ($19.99/year). The free tier is not a free distribution option like RouteNote's free plan.

Submission and Upload Process

  1. Create a free UnitedMasters account.
  2. Choose Debut+ or Select for actual distribution.
  3. Upload audio files and cover art through the web dashboard or mobile app.
  4. Enter release metadata. UnitedMasters generates ISRC and UPC codes.
  5. Select stores and territories (150+ services on paid tiers).
  6. Set up Split Pay for collaborators.
  7. Create MasterLinks for promotion.
  8. Submit. Releases typically go live in 2 to 5 business days.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • Free tier does not distribute. The Debut plan is free but does not put your music on any streaming services. It is a team member account, not a distribution tier. Do not sign up expecting free distribution.
  • Brand deals reach few artists. The Select plan's brand partnership pipeline is the main selling point, but most artists on the roster will not land a major brand deal. The pipeline is competitive and selective.
  • No publishing administration. UnitedMasters does not collect publishing royalties on any tier. You need a separate PRO registration and publishing admin service.
  • Downgrade takedowns. If you downgrade from Debut+ or Select, your releases are removed from services not covered by the lower tier. There is no release protection.
  • Slower delivery. 2 to 5 business days is slower than DistroKid's 24 to 72 hours.
  • Recurring complaints about account suspensions. UnitedMasters holds a 4-star Trustpilot rating across roughly 2,500 reviews, but complaints mention account suspensions, withheld payouts, and slow support.
  • Facebook/Instagram background monetization stopped. As of January 2025, UnitedMasters does not automatically monetize background usage of your music on Facebook and Instagram (when music appears in the background of a Reel or Story rather than being added from the Audio Library).

Who UnitedMasters Is Best For

UnitedMasters is best for hip-hop and pop artists who want access to brand partnership opportunities alongside distribution. The Debut+ plan at $19.99/year is the cheapest 100%-royalty unlimited distribution among major distributors, undercutting DistroKid ($24.99) and TuneCore ($24.99). If you are price-sensitive and want 100% royalties, Debut+ is the cheapest legitimate option.

UnitedMasters is less ideal for artists who need publishing admin, fast delivery, or release protection. If brand deals are not relevant to your genre or career stage, the Select plan's $59.99/year is hard to justify over DistroKid or TuneCore at lower price points. If you want a genuinely free distribution tier, RouteNote offers one (with a 15% commission).
