Get TicketsLowlands Festival (full name: A Campingflight to Lowlands Paradise) is a three-day music and performing arts festival held annually in Biddinghuizen, Netherlands, since 1993. The 2026 edition (August 21 to 23) features 250 acts across 12 stages with approximately 65,000 attendees. Headliners include Tyler, The Creator, Lorde, and Major Lazer. Lowlands is best suited for artists across rock, electronic, hip-hop, and alternative genres seeking performance at one of the Netherlands' most culturally diverse festivals.
About Lowlands Festival
Lowlands is a successor to one of the first Dutch pop festivals: A Flight to Lowlands Paradise, organized in November 1967 by Utrecht-based artist Bunk Bessels at the Jaarbeurs in Utrecht. The entry fee was 10 Dutch guilders including breakfast. The modern version was revived in August 1993 by Willem Venema, who moved it to Biddinghuizen at the Evenemententerrein Walibi Holland site, 68 kilometers east of Amsterdam. The first edition had poor weather (15 degrees Celsius with rain on Friday) and tickets sold at the entrance for 75 guilders. The festival has grown into a comprehensive cultural event with 12 stages across three large areas, including a cinema and theatre. Stages are named according to the NATO phonetic alphabet (Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, etc.) apart from the Heineken stage (named after the main sponsor since 2015). Most stages are housed in large tents to protect from bad weather, with the largest approximately the size of a regulation football pitch. The festival features its own currency, a local radio station, a daily newspaper, and seven luxury campsites with hot showers and flushable toilets.
2026 Edition in Detail
The 2026 edition runs August 21 to 23, with the campsite opening Thursday August 20 at 9:00 AM and closing Monday August 24 at noon. The lineup features Tyler, The Creator, Lorde, Major Lazer, Blood Orange, Parcels, Maribou State, Jose Gonzalez, Hermanos Gutierrez, Ravyn Lenae, Turnstile, jpegmafia, Clipse, Nia Archives, Floating Points, Wunderhorse, Steel Pulse, 2hollis, Nu Genea, COBRAH, kneecap, Amyl and The Sniffers, Geese, Royal Blood, Viagra Boys, Richie Hawtin, and many more. Approximately 250 acts and performances are spread across 12 stages, including not just music but also cinema, theatre, comedy, and literary events. A weekend ticket costs 365 EUR, including tourist tax, service fees, four nights of camping, and the shuttle bus between Lelystad railway station and the site. Since 2022, Lowlands co-owns a Solar Carport Park with 90,000 solar panels that produces 35 million kilowatt-hours per year, equivalent to 100 festival weekends or about 10,000 households. It is the largest Solar Carport Parking in the world.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
Lowlands' 12 stages and 250 acts create more performance opportunities than most festivals of similar size. The festival's broad programming (music, cinema, theatre, comedy) means artists from various disciplines can find a place. The 65,000 capacity provides substantial audience exposure. The festival's reputation for quality programming means a Lowlands booking carries weight in the Dutch and European music markets. The tented stages provide weather protection, ensuring consistent production quality. The festival's own currency and radio station create unique promotional opportunities. The camping format means attendees are fully immersed for three days, increasing engagement with all acts. The Solar Carport Park demonstrates the festival's commitment to sustainability, which appeals to environmentally conscious artists. Drawbacks / Things to Consider
Lowlands sells out quickly, meaning the audience is committed but limited to 65,000. The Biddinghuizen location is 68 kilometers from Amsterdam, requiring dedicated transport (shuttle buses from Lelystad station are included in the ticket). The August timing can bring hot weather, but Dutch weather is generally unpredictable. The festival's broad scope means music acts share attention with cinema, theatre, and comedy, potentially diluting focus for purely musical artists. The camping requirement means attendees are tired by day three, which can affect afternoon show attendance. The festival's own currency adds a layer of complexity for vendors and artists. The 12 stages mean scheduling conflicts are inevitable for both audiences and artists. The 365 EUR weekend ticket price is among the higher Dutch festival prices.
