Chevening Scholarship is the UK government's international scholarship program that funds one-year Master's degrees at any UK university for emerging leaders from over 160 countries and territories. It is funded by the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) and partner organizations. The award covers full tuition, a monthly living stipend, return airfare to the UK, and additional grants for thesis preparation and travel. It is best suited for musicians who already hold an undergraduate degree, have two or more years of work experience, and want to pursue a Master's in music performance, composition, musicology, arts management, or a related field at a UK institution.
How Chevening Scholarships Work
Chevening is highly competitive. In the 2024/2025 cycle, approximately 1,500 scholarships were awarded from over 60,000 applications globally. The selection process evaluates academic excellence, leadership potential, and a commitment to returning to your home country for at least two years after completing your studies.
What Is Covered
- Full tuition fees for a one-year Master's program at any UK university
- Monthly living stipend at the UK government rate (approximately £18,000 to £19,000 per year for a single recipient in London, slightly less outside London)
- Return economy airfare from your home country to the UK
- Arrival allowance to help with initial setup costs
- Thesis or dissertation grant to support research expenses
- Excess baggage allowance for return travel
- Travel grant for one or more academic conferences during your studies
Eligibility
- Be a citizen of a Chevening-eligible country or territory
- Hold an undergraduate degree sufficient to meet entry requirements for a UK Master's program (typically a 2:1 or equivalent)
- Have at least two years (2,800 hours) of work experience
- Apply to three different eligible UK university courses and receive at least one unconditional offer by the deadline
- Commit to returning to your home country for at least two years after the scholarship ends
- Not hold UK citizenship or dual UK citizenship
Application Process
Applications open in August and close in early November each year. You submit a single online application through the Chevening portal, selecting up to three UK university programs. You must write four essays covering leadership, networking, studying in the UK, and career plan. Shortlisted candidates are invited to an in-person or virtual interview at the British Embassy or High Commission in their home country, typically between February and April.
You must secure at least one unconditional offer from a UK university by the time final decisions are made. Chevening does not apply to universities on your behalf. You must manage university applications independently and in parallel.
Real-World Example
A music producer from Nigeria with a bachelor's degree in music technology and four years of experience running a recording studio applies for a Chevening Scholarship in August 2026. She selects three UK programs: MA in Music Production at the University of Westminster, MA in Sound Arts at the London College of Communication, and MA in Music and Management at the University of Leeds.
She submits her Chevening application by the November deadline, including essays about how she plans to build a music licensing infrastructure in Lagos. In March 2027, she is invited to interview at the British High Commission in Abuja. She receives an unconditional offer from the University of Westminster in April and is notified of her Chevening award in June 2027.
Her award covers approximately £17,000 in tuition, a monthly stipend of around £1,500 for 12 months, a return flight from Lagos to London, and a £500 thesis grant. The total package value exceeds £35,000. She begins her Master's in September 2027 and must return to Nigeria by September 2029 at the latest.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
Chevening is one of the most generous one-year Master's scholarships available to international students. UK conservatoires and universities offer some of the strongest music programs in the world, but international tuition fees can exceed £25,000 per year. Chevening eliminates that barrier entirely and provides enough living support to focus on your studies without working.
The two-year return requirement is the main constraint. You cannot stay in the UK to work after graduation. This is a deliberate policy: Chevening wants scholars to bring their skills back home. If your goal is to build a career in the UK music industry after your Master's, Chevening is not the right fit. If you want to study at a top UK institution and then return to develop the music sector in your home country, it is hard to beat.
The key steps are:
- Research UK Master's programs in music that match your career goals
- Apply to at least three programs through UCAS Postgraduate or directly to each university
- Draft your four Chevening essays with specific, concrete examples of leadership and networking
- Submit the Chevening application by early November
- Prepare for the interview by researching UK foreign policy priorities and your home country's development needs
Potential Drawbacks / Things to Consider
- Two-year return requirement: You must leave the UK and return to your home country for at least two years. You cannot transition to a UK work visa directly after the scholarship.
- One-year Master's only: Chevening does not fund two-year Master's programs, PhDs, or undergraduate degrees. If your target program is longer than one year, you need other funding.
- Work experience requirement: Two years of work experience is mandatory. Recent graduates without professional experience will not qualify.
- University offer dependency: You must secure at least one unconditional offer by mid-July. If no university admits you, the scholarship is withdrawn.
- Single application per year: You can only apply once per cycle. If you are rejected, you must wait until the following August to reapply.
