FACTOR (Foundation Assisting Canadian Talent on Recordings) is a Canadian nonprofit organization that provides grants to Canadian recording artists for recording, touring, marketing, video production, and songwriter development. Funded by the Department of Canadian Heritage through the Canada Music Fund and contributions from private radio broadcasters, FACTOR administers seven artist-focused programs with grants ranging from $2,000 to $35,000 CAD. In 2026, FACTOR also announced a $2 million investment in Canadian live music through its Promoter and Festival programs.

How FACTOR Funding Works

FACTOR is not a traditional scholarship provider. It funds professional recording artists at various career stages, from emerging to established. Artists must create a profile on the FACTOR portal, submit an application for a specific program, and have their project evaluated by a jury or FACTOR staff. Funding is awarded as a subsidy or reimbursement of eligible expenses, not as a direct cash prize.

Artist Programs (7 Total)

  • Artist Development: A $5,000 subsidy toward a year of artist development activities including recording, touring and showcasing, video production, and marketing. The 2026 deadline was May 7, 2026.
  • Juried Sound Recording: Single/EP: Provides 50% of eligible expenses up to a maximum of $25,000 for artists creating new recordings in a single or EP format (1 to 6 songs with a combined running time under 30 minutes). The 2026 deadline was May 14, 2026.
  • Juried Sound Recording: Album: Funds production of an original full-length album plus marketing, tour support, video, showcase, and radio marketing components. Applications open July 23, 2026 for a September 10, 2026 deadline. Up to $35,000 available.
  • Artist Entrepreneur: For artists rated 3 or Platinum Album Certified who are investing in their own masters, copyrights, and live performances. Applications open June 16, 2026 for a July 23, 2026 deadline.
  • Songwriter Development: A $2,000 subsidy toward a year of songwriting initiatives including domestic and international travel for co-writing sessions, songwriting camps and workshops, and eligible showcases. Rolling deadline.
  • Live Performance: Subsidizes domestic and international performances including showcases and tours. Rolling deadline for Artist 2 and 3 rated artists, with set deadlines for general applicants.
  • Video Production: Supports the creation of music videos as a component of the Juried Sound Recording programs.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Canadian citizenship or permanent residency
  • The applicant must be the recording artist or own the master recordings
  • Artists must have a FACTOR artist profile and rating (1 through Platinum Album Certified)
  • Higher-rated artists qualify for larger grant amounts and additional programs
  • Projects must involve original music

Real-World Example

An emerging Canadian indie artist rated at FACTOR Artist Level 1 could apply for the Artist Development program. If approved, they receive a $5,000 subsidy toward a year of development activities. They could use $2,000 for recording a single at a local studio, $1,500 for a regional tour including gas and accommodation, $1,000 for a music video, and $500 for social media marketing. The subsidy is paid as a reimbursement, so the artist pays upfront and submits receipts.

A more established artist rated at Level 3 could apply for the Juried Sound Recording: Album program. With the maximum $35,000 grant covering 50% of eligible expenses, they could fund a full album with a total budget of $70,000. The remaining $35,000 would come from the artist's own revenue, other grants, or label investment. The grant also includes marketing, tour support, and video components that extend the album's reach.

A songwriter looking to improve their craft could apply for the Songwriter Development program at any time (rolling deadline). The $2,000 subsidy could fund a trip to Nashville for co-writing sessions, attendance at a songwriting camp, or travel to an international showcase.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

If you are a Canadian recording artist, FACTOR is one of the most accessible and generous funding sources available. Unlike scholarships that require enrollment in a school, FACTOR funds working artists at any stage of their career. You do not need a label deal or manager to apply.

Start by creating a free artist profile on the FACTOR portal. Your profile includes your streaming numbers, release history, and touring activity. FACTOR uses this information to assign you a rating from 1 to Platinum Album Certified. Higher ratings unlock larger grants and more programs.

For first-time applicants, the Artist Development and Songwriter Development programs are the most accessible. Artist Development has a straightforward $5,000 subsidy structure, and Songwriter Development has a rolling deadline so you can apply whenever your project is ready.

For the Juried Sound Recording programs, plan your application well in advance. The jury evaluates the artistic merit of your project, your track record, and your marketing plan. A strong application includes high-quality demo recordings, a realistic budget, and a clear promotional strategy.

FACTOR also announced a $2 million investment in Canadian live music in 2026, with guidelines for Promoter and Festival programs launching April 30, 2026. If you perform at festivals or work with independent promoters, this new funding could expand your touring opportunities.
