The International Association of Jazz Educators (IAJE)
IAJE (defunct) / JEN (successor)
The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) was a nonprofit organization that provided jazz education scholarships and ran an annual conference from 1968 until it filed for bankruptcy in 2008 and dissolved in 2009. The Jazz Education Network (JEN) was formed as its successor and now offers 8 annual scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.

The International Association for Jazz Education (IAJE) was a nonprofit organization founded in 1968 that provided jazz education scholarships, ran an annual conference, and organized a network of over 7,000 teachers, musicians, and producers across more than 30 countries. IAJE filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy in April 2008 following financial losses from its Toronto conference and a decline in donations. The corporation formally dissolved on March 15, 2009. The Jazz Education Network (JEN) was founded in 2008 as its direct successor and now administers 8 annual jazz scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $3,000.
What Happened to IAJE
IAJE was originally incorporated as the National Association of Jazz Education (NAJE) in 1968, then renamed to the International Association of Jazz Educators in 1971, and formally incorporated as the International Association for Jazz Education in 1989. At its peak, the organization ran the largest jazz education conference in the world.
The collapse was triggered by low turnout at the 2008 Toronto conference (approximately 50% of usual attendance), combined with a broader decline in donations. The organization filed for bankruptcy in April 2008, and the 2009 conference was cancelled. The corporation ceased to exist on March 15, 2009.
IAJE's Former Scholarship Programs
IAJE allocated student scholarships through its approved festivals program. It also administered the David Baker Scholarship, the Brubeck Institute scholarship, and several other named awards. All of these programs ended when the organization dissolved. Some state-level IAJE branches (such as the New Jersey branch) reformed as independent organizations and continued operations.
The Successor: Jazz Education Network (JEN) Scholarships
The Jazz Education Network was founded in 2008 by Mary Jo Papich (who had been IAJE president-elect at the time of its collapse) and Dr. Lou Fischer. JEN now has over 4,200 members and serves more than 30,000 individuals annually. Its scholarship program has operated since the organization's first year.

Drawbacks / Things to Consider
- IAJE no longer exists. Any website or organization claiming to be IAJE is not legitimate.
- The original IAJE website is defunct. Do not attempt to apply through any IAJE URLs.
- JEN requires membership for some (but not all) scholarships. Membership adds an additional cost.
- The David Brubeck Scholarship requires attendance at the JEN conference in January, which means travel and registration costs.
- The application window is narrow: January 1 to April 15, 2026. Missing this window means waiting a full year.
- Most scholarships are capped at $1,000 to $2,000, which covers only a fraction of typical tuition.
- Some scholarships are restricted to US citizens or permanent residents.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
If you are a jazz student looking for scholarship funding, apply through JEN, not IAJE. JEN is the legitimate successor organization with an active scholarship program.
The David Baker Scholarship at $3,000 is the largest single award. If you are a jazz pianist or composer, the Dave Brubeck Scholarship is specifically for you. Vocal jazz students should look at the Dr. Dee Daniels Scholarship. Drummers have a dedicated option with the Stanley Kay Scholarship.
Start your application in January 2026. Prepare audition materials and recommendation letters before the April 15 deadline. If you need JEN membership, join before applying. Visit the JEN Scholarships page for official guidelines and application forms.
