Carolyn Bailey Argento Fellowship for Vocal Performance
The Argento Fellowship is the most substantial award offered by NOA. Made possible through an endowment established by composer Dominick Argento (1927 to 2019) in honor of his wife, soprano Carolyn Bailey Argento, the fellowship provides:
- Full graduate-level tuition and applicable fees, paid directly to the institution
- A living expense stipend based on the institution's projected per-student costs
- Up to $50,000 per year
- Funding until degree completion: up to two years for a master's-level degree (MM or AD) or three years for a doctoral degree (DMA)
The fellowship only covers tuition, fees, and living expenses unmet by other scholarships, grants, or assistantships. Applicants must have financial need of at least $5,000 per year for their degree program. Applications for the 2027 awards are now open, with a deadline of October 1, 2026. The recipient must provide proof of matriculation by April 15, 2027.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists
The Argento Fellowship is one of the most generous voice scholarships in the United States. Most opera scholarships cover partial tuition or provide one-time awards. The Argento Fellowship covers full tuition and living expenses for an entire graduate degree, which can total $100,000 to $150,000 depending on the program length.
For singers who are not yet ready for graduate study, the Vocal Competition provides cash prizes and performance exposure. Finalists perform at the NOA conference in front of university faculty, opera company directors, and industry professionals.
