OPERA America Discovery Grants provide up to $15,000 to individual women composers for the development of new operas. Funded by the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, the grants support activities such as libretto readings, workshops, and working performances that help women composers explore opera as an artistic medium. The 2026 cycle awarded $100,000 in grants to eight women composers. Applicants must be United States citizens, permanent residents, or possess Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) status, and must identify as women composers. The grant period runs from April 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The grants are best suited for women composers who are exploring opera for the first time or developing a new operatic work and need funding for a workshop, reading, or performance-based developmental event.

How OPERA America Discovery Grants Work

OPERA America is the national service organization for opera in the United States. Through the generous support of the Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, OPERA America offers two types of Opera Grants for Women Composers: Commissioning Grants (available to Professional Company Members) and Discovery Grants (available to individual artists). Both programs aim to advance gender parity and diversity across the opera field by supporting the development of new operas by women composers.

Discovery Grants support women composers in their exploration of opera as an artistic medium. The grants fund activities such as:

  • Libretto readings
  • Workshops
  • Working performances
  • Other performance-based developmental events

OPERA America expects to award 6 to 8 Discovery Grants per cycle. The maximum request accepted is $15,000 per applicant.

OPERA America announced the eight recipients of the 2026 Discovery Grants on its website. Grants totaling $100,000 were awarded to support the development of new opera and music-theater works:

The Intent to Apply Requirement

An intent to apply form is required for all applications and is due by December 18, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. ET. Only applicants who submit an intent to apply may submit a full application. Applicants will receive notification if their intent to apply form has been advanced to the application stage. This two-stage process allows OPERA America to screen applicants before inviting full proposals.

How to Apply

  1. Review the Guidelines, Intent to Apply Questions, and Application Questions on the OPERA America website.
  2. Submit the Intent to Apply form by December 18, 2025, through OPERA America's Grants Portal.
  3. If advanced to the application stage, submit a complete final application by January 22, 2026, including all supplemental materials.
  4. Applications must be submitted online through the Grants Portal. Incomplete, late, or mailed/emailed/faxed applications will not be accepted.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Gender identity: Applicants must identify as cis or trans women composers.
  • Citizenship: United States citizens, permanent residents, or DACA status holders only. This requirement is set by the funding partner (Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation), which does not make grants outside the US.
  • Applicant role: The composer is considered the applicant for all submissions. Applications submitted on behalf of a project with more than one composer, or that represent the efforts of a collective, are allowed, but the applicant is considered the sole representative and sole recipient of any grant award.
  • Project type: The grant supports the development of new operas or music-theater works through workshops, readings, or performance-based developmental events.

Required Application Materials

  • Applicant information (biography, website, gender identity, citizenship status)
  • Composer and librettist information
  • Proposed project description
  • Budget (using OPERA America's Budget Template)
  • Supplemental materials as specified in the guidelines

All materials must be submitted online via the Grants Portal.

Benefits

  • Up to $15,000 in funding: Substantial support for a developmental workshop, reading, or performance.
  • No matching requirement: The grant does not require matching funds (check current guidelines for confirmation).
  • Conference access: Free registration and travel support for OPERA America's 2026 and 2027 Opera Conferences.
  • Mentorship: Direct access to established opera professionals for guidance and career development.
  • Professional network: Connection to opera companies, producers, and potential commissioners through OPERA America's network.
  • Prestige: OPERA America is the national service organization for opera. Receiving a Discovery Grant signals recognition from the field's leading institution.
  • Career development: The grant supports the creation of a developmental event (workshop, reading) that can lead to a full commission from an opera company.
  • Gender parity mission: The grant is part of a deliberate effort to increase the representation of women composers in opera, a field where women have been historically underrepresented.

Real-World Example

A 32-year-old composer has written several chamber works and song cycles but has never written an opera. She has a concept for a one-act opera based on a historical figure and has drafted a libretto with a collaborator. She needs funding to stage a workshop reading with singers and a small ensemble to test the work and get feedback.

She submits an Intent to Apply form by December 18, 2025, through OPERA America's Grants Portal. OPERA America reviews the intent and advances her to the full application stage. She submits a complete application by January 22, 2026, including her project description, budget (using OPERA America's template), and supplemental materials.

In February 2026, she is notified that she has been awarded a $15,000 Discovery Grant. She uses the funds to hire four singers, a music director, and a small chamber ensemble for a two-day workshop in April 2026. The workshop culminates in a reading for an invited audience of opera company representatives. Based on the reading, a regional opera company expresses interest in commissioning the full work.

She also receives travel support and free registration for the 2026 and 2027 Opera Conferences, where she meets potential producers, librettists, and commissioners. The mentorship component pairs her with an established opera composer who provides guidance on orchestrating for larger ensembles and structuring a full-length opera.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • Women composers only: The grant is restricted to individuals who identify as women composers. Men and non-binary composers are not eligible.
  • US citizenship required: Applicants must be US citizens, permanent residents, or DACA holders. International composers are not eligible.
  • Two-stage application: The Intent to Apply form is mandatory and due a month before the full application. Missing the intent deadline disqualifies you from applying.
  • Opera focus: The grant specifically supports the development of new operas and music-theater works. Composers working in other genres (concert music, film scoring, pop) are not eligible.
  • Individual applicants only: The composer must be the applicant. Applications from organizations, ensembles, or opera companies are not accepted for Discovery Grants (they should look at Commissioning Grants instead).
  • Sole recipient: If the project has multiple composers, the applicant is the sole representative and sole recipient of the grant award.
  • Grant period constraints: The grant period runs April 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027. The funded activity must occur within this window.
  • Competitive: OPERA America expects to award 6 to 8 grants per cycle. With $100,000 awarded to 8 recipients in 2026, the acceptance rate is low.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

OPERA America Discovery Grants address a specific gap in music funding: support for women composers exploring opera. Opera is one of the most resource-intensive art forms, requiring singers, instrumentalists, staging, and venue access. A workshop or reading can cost thousands of dollars before a single ticket is sold. The Discovery Grant provides the funding to make this developmental stage possible.

If you are a woman composer in the United States with an interest in writing opera, the Discovery Grant is one of the few funding sources specifically designed for you. The two-stage application process (Intent to Apply, then Full Application) requires careful planning. Start preparing your intent form well before the December 18 deadline.

Even if you have never written an opera before, the grant is designed to support exploration. The 2026 recipients include composers at various career stages, from those writing their first operatic work to those with prior experience. What matters is having a compelling project concept and a clear plan for how the grant funds will be used.
