The Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) is Norway's leading institution for higher music education, founded in 1973 and located in Oslo. Tuition and Costs
NMH charges no tuition fees for students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. For students from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, the tuition fee is 220,000 NOK per academic year (approximately $20,000 USD, depending on exchange rates). The full amount must be paid by June 1 before the start of the academic year. NMH does not offer scholarships to cover tuition fees.
Exchange students from NMH's partner universities are exempt from tuition fees. Students who started their studies before autumn 2023 are also exempt.
Living costs in Oslo are separate from tuition. Students should budget for housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses. Norway does not charge tuition to domestic students, and the education system is heavily subsidized by the government.
Admission and Audition Process
The application deadline for all programs is December 15. The admission process for 2026 intake follows this timeline:
- October 15, 2025: Audition information published
- November 1, 2025: Application portal (Soknadsweb) opens
- December 15, 2025: Application deadline (all supporting documents must be uploaded)
- January 15, 2026: Deadline for submitting video material for the first round of auditions
- March 9 to 13, 2026: Live auditions and interviews for approved applicants
- March 18, 2026: Admission decisions released
Applicants must pass a test in music theory and aural skills, in addition to their performance audition. International applicants must meet language requirements (Norwegian for most undergraduate programs, English for some graduate programs).

Arne Nordheim (1930-2010)
Norway's most prominent contemporary composer. Nordheim studied at NMH and later taught there. He wrote works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, electronic media, and opera. His piece Eco for soprano, two choirs, and orchestra marked his transition from electronic to post-electronic composition. He received the Nordic Council Music Prize in 1975. NRK produced multiple documentaries about his life and work.
Tine Thing Helseth (b. 1987)
Trumpet virtuoso. Helseth studied at NMH from 2009 to 2011 under Arnulf Naur Nilsen of the Oslo Philharmonic. She made her recording debut in 2008 with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra on the Simax Classics label. She has since recorded for EMI Classics and Warner Classics. Gramophone praised her "soulful approach to phrasing, astonishingly outstanding intonation, and open and honest sound." She has served as artistic director of the Risor Chamber Music Festival since 2023 and teaches trumpet at NMH.

Solveig Kringlebotn (b. 1963)
Soprano. Kringlebotn trained at NMH and the University College of Opera in Stockholm. She is one of Norway's most recognized classical singers and a particular champion of Edvard Grieg's music. She made her operatic debut in 1987 at the Royal Swedish Opera. She has performed at major opera houses across Europe and North America.
Hanne Hukkelberg (b. 1979)
Vocalist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist. Hukkelberg graduated from NMH in 2003. She studied jazz and developed a style blending jazz, rock, and experimental music. Her debut album Little Things (2004) was produced by Kare Chr. Vestrheim, whom she met at NMH. She has released multiple albums on the Propeller Recordings label and won a Norwegian Grammy (Spellemannprisen).
Trond Halstein Moe
Opera singer (baritone). Moe studied at NMH and has performed with the Norwegian National Opera for many years. He is one of Norway's most recognized operatic performers.
Henrik Hellstenius (b. 1963)
Composer and musicologist. Hellstenius studied at NMH and has written works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, and opera. He has served as professor of composition at NMH.
Marcus Paus (b. 1979)
Composer. Paus studied at NMH and is one of Norway's most performed contemporary composers. His works include orchestral pieces, chamber music, and opera.
Leif Solberg (1914-2016)
Classical composer and organist. Solberg studied at NMH and composed works rooted in Norwegian folk and Lutheran church music traditions. He remained active as a composer well into his 90s.

Program Basics
Audition Requirements
All applicants must pass a performance audition on their main instrument, plus a test in music theory and aural skills. The audition process has two rounds.
