Learn MoreThe Norwegian Academy of Music (NMH) is Norway's leading institution for higher music education, founded in 1973 and located in Oslo. NMH offers bachelor's, master's, and PhD programs across classical performance, contemporary music, jazz, composition, conducting, music therapy, and music education. The academy serves approximately 600 students with state-of-the-art facilities that rank among the best in Europe.
Programs and Study Options
NMH offers a wide range of degree programs at undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral levels:
- Bachelor of Music Performance (Classical and Contemporary): The flagship undergraduate program. Students specialize in instruments including piano, strings, woodwinds, brass, percussion, voice, guitar, accordion, and organ. The program combines one-to-one tuition, ensemble participation, and performance experience.
- Bachelor of Music in Conducting: Orchestral and choral conducting training.
- Bachelor of Music with Individual Concentration (FRIBA): A self-designed program letting students combine multiple disciplines and genres. The first two years are taught in Norwegian; the third and fourth year may be taught in English for transfer students.
- Master of Music Performance: Advanced performance training for students who have already reached a high technical and musical level.
- Master of Music in Conducting: For advanced orchestral and choral conductors.
- Master of Music in Composition: Focused on contemporary classical and jazz composition.
- Master of Music in Practice-Oriented Music Analysis: A unique program combining analytical and performance perspectives.
- PhD in Music Research and PhD in Artistic Research: Doctoral programs for advanced scholarship and practice-based research.
- Artist Diploma: A one-year advanced performance program for musicians who already hold a master's degree.
NMH also offers continuing education programs including piano tuning, jazz composition, improvisation-based contemporary music, and teacher training (PPU).
Tuition and Costs
NMH charges no tuition fees for students from EU/EEA countries and Switzerland. For students from outside the EU/EEA/Switzerland, the tuition fee is 220,000 NOK per academic year (approximately $20,000 USD, depending on exchange rates). The full amount must be paid by June 1 before the start of the academic year. NMH does not offer scholarships to cover tuition fees.
Exchange students from NMH's partner universities are exempt from tuition fees. Students who started their studies before autumn 2023 are also exempt.
Living costs in Oslo are separate from tuition. Students should budget for housing, food, transportation, and personal expenses. Norway does not charge tuition to domestic students, and the education system is heavily subsidized by the government.

Facilities and Environment
NMH provides some of the best music education facilities in Europe. The campus includes concert halls, recording studios, practice rooms, and specialized spaces for different instrument families. Students have access to leading Norwegian and international musicians as faculty, and the academy maintains an expansive international network of music professionals.
The academy encourages students to explore cross-genre work. Classical students can draw inspiration from jazz, folk music, composition, music technology, music therapy, and music education communities within the same institution.
Who Should Apply
NMH is an excellent choice for European students seeking tuition-free, high-quality music education in a country with a strong public funding model for the arts. The academy is particularly strong for classical performers, composers, and conductors who want rigorous training in a supportive, non-competitive environment. International students from outside the EU/EEA should weigh the 220,000 NOK tuition against alternatives in their home countries. The FRIBA program is uniquely suited for musicians who want to combine multiple genres or disciplines in a self-designed curriculum.
