Peabody Institute is the conservatory division of Johns Hopkins University, founded in 1857 in Baltimore, Maryland. It is the oldest conservatory in the United States, offering degrees in classical performance, jazz, composition, music education, computer music, and recording arts. For fall 2026, Peabody admitted its most selective class ever with a 23% acceptance rate.

Programs and Degrees

Peabody offers Bachelor of Music (BM), Master of Music (MM), Doctor of Musical Arts (DMA), and Artist Diploma programs across the following areas:

  • Classical Performance: Orchestral instruments, piano, voice, guitar, and harp
  • Jazz Studies: Performance, composition, and arranging for jazz ensembles
  • Composition: Acoustic and electronic composition with opportunities for performance by student ensembles
  • Music Education: K-12 certification pathways combining performance training with pedagogy
  • Computer Music and Recording Arts: Electronic composition, sound design, and music technology
  • Dance: Ballet and contemporary dance training (Peabody Dance division)

The Doctor of Musical Arts program became tuition-free in 2025 through its two-year residency model, dropping the DMA acceptance rate from 29% to 6% in two years.

Tuition and Costs (2026-27)

Peabody's tuition for the 2026-27 academic year is $68,670 for full-time degree programs and Artist Diploma programs. Additional costs include:

  • Health Service Fee: $644 per year
  • Student Technology and Activities Fee: $362 per year
  • Health Insurance: $3,624 per year (waivable with proof of comparable coverage)
  • Application Fee: $120 (nonrefundable)
  • Tuition Deposit: $700 for new students

Peabody meets 100% of demonstrated financial need with no loans for all admitted undergraduate students. This policy, introduced in 2022, contributed to a dramatic increase in selectivity. The undergraduate admission rate dropped from 48% to 23% over three years, while yield increased from 26% to 40%.

Campus and Facilities

Peabody is located in the Mount Vernon neighborhood of Baltimore, adjacent to the Johns Hopkins University Homewood campus. The institute reopened the renovated Miriam A. Friedberg Concert Hall in April 2026 after extensive acoustic upgrades and restorative work. A new Peabody Residential Commons with apartment-style living is opening for fall 2026, replacing older on-campus housing.

The LAUNCHPad entrepreneurship center and Breakthrough Curriculum help students build careers through coursework in arts management, grant writing, marketing, and community engagement. Peabody also operates the Music for a While program, which brings Peabody musicians to perform at Johns Hopkins Hospital for patients and staff.

Admission and Audition Process

Admission requires a live or recorded audition and an interview. Applicants are evaluated on musical proficiency, artistic potential, and academic preparation. Peabody does not require SAT or ACT scores for admission. Application deadlines typically fall in December for regular decision. International students must demonstrate English proficiency through TOEFL or IELTS scores.

Who Should Apply

Peabody is suited for musicians who want conservatory-level training within a research university environment. The Johns Hopkins connection gives students access to cross-registration, dual degrees, and research opportunities unavailable at standalone conservatories. The no-loans financial aid policy makes Peabody more affordable than its sticker price suggests, but applicants should still compare aid packages carefully. The school is less suited for students seeking contemporary commercial music training (consider Berklee for that path) or purely academic musicology degrees.
