SPA (Sociedade Portuguesa de Autores) is a Portuguese cooperative collective management organization founded in 1925 that licenses the public performance, broadcasting, reproduction, and digital use of its members' works. It represents over 27,000 Portuguese authors and publishers across music, literature, visual arts, audiovisual, theater, and dance, and approximately 5 million international creators through reciprocal agreements with sister societies worldwide.
How SPA Works
SPA operates as a cooperative owned and governed by its members. The organization collects royalties from businesses that play music or use creative works publicly, including radio stations, television networks, streaming platforms, concert venues, restaurants, retail stores, and cinemas. Collected fees are distributed to members based on usage data gathered from broadcast logs, streaming reports, concert set lists, and venue reporting.
SPA employs over 160 people across its departments, which include the Music Royalties Department (DEDIM), the Membership Department (DEAPA), and the Operations Department (DEDIG). The Operations Department handles repertoire registration, usage control, matching, and royalty distribution for all types of uses within SPA's scope.
In 2025, SPA collected EUR 82,278,899.21 in royalties and achieved a net operating result of EUR 4,416,262.59. The organization's equity reached EUR 16,264,667.54, reflecting sustained financial consolidation. The IAPMEI (Portuguese public agency for competitiveness and innovation) evaluated SPA's 2025 performance and rated the institution's financial situation as clearly positive, with an improved rating over previous years.
SPA celebrated its 101st anniversary on May 22, 2026, marking over a century of operation. The organization received the Ordem de Camoes from the President of Portugal and unanimous praise from the Assembly of the Republic during its centennial year in 2025.
Membership is open to authors and publishers across all creative fields. SPA operates as a cooperative, meaning members vote on governance decisions at general assemblies. The 2026 budget and annual report were approved by 164 votes at the General Assembly on March 30, 2026. The current administration, led by Jose Jorge Letria, was re-elected in November 2025.
SPA is a member of the Board of the European Group of Authors' Societies (GESAC), based in Brussels, and holds CISAC membership. The organization is actively preparing to address challenges posed by artificial intelligence, receiving concerns from authors who feel threatened by AI technologies that could affect creative and identity-related work. SPA is advocating for legal frameworks to protect authors from unauthorized AI use of their works.
Real-World Example
A Portuguese songwriter joins SPA and registers 15 songs. A Lisbon radio station plays 8 of those songs in a given quarter, Spotify reports 200,000 streams of 10 songs, and three restaurants hold SPA blanket licenses covering background music. SPA collects royalties from all three sources.
The songwriter receives a distribution based on the radio airplay logs and streaming usage data. If the same songs are played on radio in Brazil, SPA's reciprocal agreement with ECAD (the Brazilian collective management organization) means ECAD collects those royalties and remits them to SPA, which distributes them to the songwriter in the next international distribution cycle.
With SPA's 2025 collection of EUR 82.3 million, a songwriter with 15 registered songs receiving regular airplay on Portuguese radio and moderate streaming activity might earn anywhere from EUR 300 to EUR 30,000 annually, depending on the scale of usage. A songwriter whose work appears in a Portuguese television series can submit cue sheets to SPA to ensure those performances are tracked and compensated.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
If you are a Portuguese songwriter, composer, or publisher, SPA membership is the only practical way to collect performance royalties when your music is played publicly in Portugal. Without it, you are not collecting royalties from radio, TV, streaming platforms, live venues, or businesses that use your music.
Join SPA when your music is likely to be used publicly (live gigs, online streaming, physical release, television). Register every composition with correct split sheets, ISRC codes, and ISWC numbers before commercial release. Unregistered works earn zero royalties, even if they receive thousands of plays.
SPA covers more creative fields than most PROs. If you are a musician who also writes literature, creates visual art, or works in audiovisual production, SPA can manage rights across all these areas under a single membership. This is unusual among European collective management organizations, which typically specialize in music alone.
SPA's reciprocal agreements with foreign societies mean your royalties flow back to you when your music is played internationally. The organization's advocacy on AI policy is directly relevant to independent artists. SPA's 2025 campaign to pressure the Portuguese government on AI legislation could shape how AI companies use your music.
