Atlantic Records is Warner Music Group's largest US frontline imprint, founded in 1947 in New York by Ahmet Ertegun and Herb Abramson. It is the anchor of Atlantic Music Group, which operates with significant autonomy within WMG. Atlantic built the careers of Aretha Franklin, Led Zeppelin, and Otis Redding, and its modern roster includes Ed Sheeran, Bruno Mars, Megan Thee Stallion, and Lizzo.

Atlantic's history spans jazz, R&B, rock, and hip-hop. It was the label that broke Led Zeppelin in the US and carried Aretha Franklin's classic catalog. Today it is a full-service major imprint with its own marketing, A&R, and promotion, backed by WMG's global distribution. Atlantic Music Group also contains 300 Entertainment, Fueled by Ramen, and 10K Projects.

How Atlantic Operates

Atlantic functions as a semi-autonomous unit within WMG. It runs its own A&R and marketing strategy and operates joint-venture imprints with established artists and executives. This structure gives Atlantic more flexibility than a typical major imprint. Its strength is long-term artist development across pop, rock, hip-hop, and R&B.

Label History and Documentary

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame produced this tribute to Ahmet Ertegun, who co-founded Atlantic Records in 1947 with a $10,000 loan from his family dentist. Ertegun built the label from a two-room hotel suite in Manhattan into one of the most influential record companies in history.

Historical Roster

Atlantic's catalog spans jazz, R&B, soul, rock, and hip-hop across nearly eight decades.

Aretha Franklin signed with Atlantic in 1966 after her Columbia Records contract expired. Producer Jerry Wexler brought her to Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, resulting in seven consecutive singles that made both the US Pop and Soul Top 10. "Respect" (1967) reached #1 on both the Pop and Soul charts and won a Grammy. Her Atlantic albums I Never Loved a Man the Way I Love You (1967) and Aretha Now (1968) are considered foundational soul recordings. She sold 16.5 million albums and singles in the US based on RIAA certifications.

Led Zeppelin signed with Atlantic through their Swan Song imprint. Their debut album Led Zeppelin (1969) reached #10 on the Billboard 200 and is certified 8x Platinum. Led Zeppelin IV (1971) is their most commercially successful album, certified 24x Platinum by the RIAA, making it one of the best-selling albums of all time. The band has sold over 300 million records worldwide and 112.5 million certified albums in the US.

Otis Redding recorded for Atco, an Atlantic subsidiary. "(Sittin' On) The Dock of the Bay" (1968) became his biggest hit, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 after his death in 1967. Atlantic's distribution deal with Stax Records brought Redding's music to a national audience.

Ray Charles recorded for Atlantic from 1952 to 1959. His Atlantic singles "I Got a Woman" (1954) and "What'd I Say" (1959) are considered foundational recordings of soul music. He left for ABC-Paramount in 1959 but his Atlantic catalog remains among the label's most historically significant holdings.

Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young signed with Atlantic in the late 1960s. Their 1970 album Deja Vu reached #1 on the Billboard 200 and is certified 7x Platinum.

Deal Structure and Royalties

Master Ownership: Under a standard Atlantic deal, the label (through Warner Music Group) owns the master recordings. This is the default for major label signings. Atlantic's semi-autonomous structure within WMG means deal terms can vary across its sub-imprints (300 Entertainment, Fueled by Ramen, 10K Projects, Artist Partner Group).

Royalty Rates: New artist deals at Atlantic typically offer royalty rates between 10% and 18% of the wholesale price (PPD). Established artists can negotiate higher rates. Royalty calculations are applied after recoupment of advances and recording costs. Atlantic often competes with other labels to sign acts, which can drive up advance amounts and royalty rates.

Advances and Recoupment: Atlantic provides recording funds and advances that are fully recoupable from artist royalties. Recording costs, video production, and marketing expenses are cross-collateralized. Artists do not receive royalty payments until all recoupable expenses are recovered. Atlantic's reputation for long-term artist development (Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars both developed over multiple album cycles) means advances may be structured to support multi-album career arcs rather than short-term returns.

360 Deals: Atlantic Records is where the 360 deal originated. Paramore signed what is widely considered the first new artist 360 deal with Atlantic and Fueled by Ramen in 2006. Under a 360 deal, the label takes a percentage of non-recorded-music income including touring, merchandise, branding, and sponsorships. The standard range is 10% to 30% of touring revenue, though terms are negotiable. In the current market, artists can often negotiate lower percentages (5% to 15% above a threshold), higher "shelters" (income protected from the label), and exclusions for certain revenue streams. Songwriting and publishing royalties should be explicitly carved out. The 360 deal has become more of a starting point than a requirement, as the recorded music market has recovered and labels no longer need the same level of ancillary income to stay profitable.

Distribution Network: Atlantic distributes through Warner Music Group's global infrastructure, covering physical, digital, and streaming distribution worldwide. Atlantic Music Group operates semi-autonomously within WMG, running its own A&R, marketing, and promotion. The group includes 300 Entertainment, Fueled by Ramen, 10K Projects, Artist Partner Group, and Canvasback. In midyear 2026, Atlantic Music Group held an 8.50% current market share, ranking second among US label groups, driven by projects from Bruno Mars and Don Toliver.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

Atlantic has a reputation for sustained artist development (Ed Sheeran and Bruno Mars both developed over multiple album cycles). Its joint-venture model means established artists and executives can launch imprints under Atlantic, creating more signing pathways than a single-imprint major.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • Master ownership: Atlantic (via WMG) owns your masters under a standard deal.
  • Autonomy means inconsistency: Atlantic Music Group's semi-independent structure can mean strategy varies across its sub-imprints.
  • No unsolicited demos: You need representation or a joint-venture relationship.
  • Roster size: A large roster means developing artists compete for attention.
