Daptone Records

Daptone Records is an American independent soul and funk label founded in 2001 by Bosco Mann (Gabriel Roth) and Neal Sugarman in Bushwick, Brooklyn. It is musician-owned and operated. Daptone channels the spirits of bygone powerhouses like Stax and Motown into soul-drenched recordings, delivered by the likes of Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, Lee Fields, Menahan Street Band, Binky Griptite, the Budos Band, Naomi Davis, and the Sugarman 3. The label employs 4 people and is distributed by The Orchard and Redeye Worldwide.

Daptone built its reputation on analog soul recordings made at its own Daptone Studios in Bushwick. The Dap-Kings (the label's house band) backed Sharon Jones on her career-defining albums and also played on Amy Winehouse's Back to Black (2006), which brought Daptone's sound to a global audience. The Dap-Kings recorded the backing tracks for "Rehab," "You Know I'm No Good," and several other songs on the album at Daptone Studios. The label's model is built around its own studio, its house bands, and a community of musicians who record for the label and its subsidiaries (Dunham Records, Penrose Records).

Notable Artists and Releases

Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings

Sharon Jones was Daptone's defining artist. She recorded seven studio albums with the Dap-Kings between 2002 and 2017, including Dap-Dippin' with Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings (2002), Naturally (2005), 100 Days, 100 Nights (2007), I Learned the Hard Way (2010), Soul Time! (2011), Give the People What They Want (2014), and It's a Holiday Soul Party (2015). I Learned the Hard Way reached number 15 on the Billboard 200, the label's highest-charting album. Jones died from pancreatic cancer in November 2016 at age 60. Her 2017 posthumous release Soul of a Woman was her final album.

Charles Bradley

Charles Bradley was signed to Daptone's Dunham Records subsidiary and released four studio albums between 2011 and 2018. He was 62 years old when his debut album No Time for Dreaming (Daptone DAP-022 / Dunham DUN-1001) was released in January 2011. His discography includes No Time for Dreaming (2011), Victim of Love (2013, DAP-031), Changes (2016, DAP-041), and the posthumous compilation Black Velvet (2018, DAP-054). Changes reached number 54 on the Billboard 200. The title track, a cover of Black Sabbath's "Changes," became Bradley's signature song with over 30 million views across YouTube. Bradley died from leukemia in September 2017 at age 68.

Lee Fields

Lee Fields has recorded for Daptone since the late 2000s. His albums include My World (2009), Faithful Man (2012, Truth and Soul), Emma Jean (2014), Big Crown (2017), and Sentimental Fool (2022, Daptone). "Ladies" from My World became his most streamed track. Fields made his NPR Tiny Desk Concert debut in 2023, performing songs from Sentimental Fool alongside "Ladies":

Menahan Street Band

Menahan Street Band is Daptone's instrumental house band, based at Thomas Brenneck's Dunham Studios. Their debut album Make the Road by Walking (2008, Dunham DAP-015-LP) contains "Make the Road by Walking," which Jay-Z sampled for "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is)..." from American Gangster (2007). The album has been sampled by 50 Cent, Kid Cudi, and other hip-hop artists. Their second album The Crossing was released in 2021:

The Budos Band

The Budos Band is Daptone's Afrobeat and instrumental funk outfit. They have released five albums on the label: Budos Stax (2005), The Budos Band (2007), Budos II (2009), Budos III (2010), and Budos V (2014). Their music has been sampled by Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and other hip-hop producers.

How Daptone Operates

Daptone is musician-owned and operated. The label records at its own Daptone Studios in Bushwick, using analog equipment to capture its signature soul sound. It signs artists through its Bushwick community and personal relationships rather than traditional A&R scouting. Distribution flows through The Orchard and Redeye Worldwide. The label's small team (4 people) reflects its hands-on, musician-led approach.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider
