Interscope Records is Universal Music Group's Santa Monica-based flagship imprint, founded in 1990 by Jimmy Iovine and Ted Field. It operates as part of the Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA) group. Interscope built its name on hip-hop and alternative rock in the 1990s (Tupac, Nine Inch Nails, Dr. Dre) and has since become a dominant pop and streaming-era label. Its current roster includes Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, Kendrick Lamar, and Lady Gaga.

Interscope's affiliated imprints extend its reach: Aftermath Entertainment (Dr. Dre's label, home to Kendrick Lamar), Shady Records (Eminem), and Darkroom Records (Billie Eilish's label with brother Finneas). Geffen and A&M operate within the same group.

How Interscope Operates

Interscope is known for artist development with a long runway. Billie Eilish was signed at 14 and developed over years before her debut. The label invests heavily in visual identity, marketing, and global rollout. Its A&R team actively scouts on TikTok, YouTube, and Spotify Discover Weekly, not just at live shows.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

Interscope has a track record of breaking artists who do not fit the conventional pop mold (Billie Eilish's debut, Olivia Rodrigo's pop-punk pivot). If your music has a distinct identity and you have started building a real audience, Interscope is one of the more taste-driven major imprints.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • Master ownership: Interscope (via UMG) owns your masters under a standard deal.
  • Long development cycles can mean long waits: The same patience that benefits Billie Eilish can leave a developing artist unsigned-but-locked for years.
  • No unsolicited submissions: You need a manager, attorney, or an imprint referral.
  • A&R scouting is data-driven: Having early streaming or social numbers materially increases your odds of being noticed.

Label History and Documentary

Breaking Boundaries and Topping Charts: The Story of Interscope Records

Jimmy Iovine and Ted Field founded Interscope Records in 1990 with funding from Atlantic Records (then part of Warner Music Group). The label's early signings included Gerardo, Marky Mark, and Dr. Dre, whose "The Chronic" (1992) established Interscope as a force in hip-hop. Interscope faced intense political scrutiny over gangsta rap (Tupac, Snoop Dogg), and Time Warner forced Atlantic to sever ties in 1995. Iovine secured a new distribution deal with MCA (later Universal), and Interscope became part of Universal Music Group. The label expanded into alternative rock (Nine Inch Nails, Limp Bizkit, No Doubt) and pop (Lady Gaga, Madonna's later catalog). In 2014, Iovine left to join Apple (after selling Beats by Dre), and John Janick took over as CEO. Under Janick, Interscope signed and developed Billie Eilish, Olivia Rodrigo, and continued its relationship with Kendrick Lamar through Aftermath Entertainment.

Deal Structure and Royalties

Interscope operates within the Interscope Geffen A&M (IGA) group under Universal Music Group. Deal structures typically follow major-label conventions:

  • Master ownership: Interscope (via UMG) owns master recordings under standard contracts. Distribution-only deals (like Megan Thee Stallion's partnership) allow artists to retain master ownership while paying Interscope a distribution fee, typically 15 to 25 percent of gross revenue.
  • Royalty rates: New artists generally receive 12 to 16 percent of retail price on physical and digital sales. Streaming royalties are calculated as a share of UMG's pooled streaming revenue, netting artists approximately 10 to 14 percent. Top-tier artists (Billie Eilish, Kendrick Lamar, Lady Gaga) negotiate rates of 20 to 25 percent or higher, often with reduced deductions.
  • Advances: Interscope is known for substantial advances, particularly for artists with proven streaming or social traction. New signings can receive anywhere from $250,000 to several million. Superstar deals (Ed Sheeran, Megan Thee Stallion) involve significantly larger figures. All advances are recoupable against future royalties.
  • Recoupment: Recording costs, video production, marketing campaigns, and tour support are recoupable from artist royalties. Interscope's artist development model (as seen with Billie Eilish) means significant upfront investment that may take years to recoup. Cross-collateralization across albums is standard practice.
  • 360 deals: Most Interscope contracts include 360 provisions. The label typically takes 10 to 20 percent of touring income, 10 to 25 percent of merchandising, and 10 to 20 percent of publishing and endorsement income. Artists with strong leverage can negotiate reduced rates or carve-outs. Distribution-only deals (like Megan Thee Stallion's) generally exclude 360 provisions entirely.
  • Distribution network: Interscope leverages UMG's global distribution for physical and digital releases. Aftermath, Shady, Darkroom, Geffen, and A&M operate as imprints within IGA, each with its own A&R but sharing distribution and back-office infrastructure. Digital distribution covers all major DSPs (Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon Music, YouTube Music, Tidal) with dedicated playlist pitching and editorial support.
