XL Recordings

XL Recordings is a British independent label founded in 1989 by Tim Palmer and Nick Halkes, now majority-owned (51%) by Beggars Group as of October 2024. Based in London, XL is home to Adele, The Prodigy, Fontaines D.C., Peggy Gou, and Radiohead's later catalog. It is one of the most commercially successful independent labels in the world, with Adele's catalog alone generating enormous revenue.

XL's identity is built on artist-driven, long-term development. Founder Richard Russell signed Adele after hearing a single track on a MySpace page, and developed her career over multiple album cycles that sold tens of millions of copies. XL also signed The Prodigy, Dizzee Rascal, and Radiohead's later work. The label operates the Young Turks imprint for more experimental signings.

The following documentary was made at the suggestion of XL founder Richard Russell. It profiles Gil Scott-Heron, whose final album I'm New Here (2010) was produced by Russell and released on XL. The film was directed by Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard (the filmmakers behind 20,000 Days on Earth) and features interviews with Gil's friends, family, and fellow musicians.

XL's roster has always been small but commercially outsized. The label has released some of the best-selling albums of the 21st century.

The Prodigy's "Firestarter" was released on XL in 1996 and became one of the label's first breakout hits. It reached number one in the UK and charted across Europe. The official video has over 203 million views on YouTube.

Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" was the lead single from 21 (2011), released on XL. The album sold over 31 million copies worldwide and won six Grammy Awards including Album of the Year.

Fontaines D.C. released "Starburster" in April 2024 as the lead single from ROMANCE, their first album on XL Recordings. The track has over 13 million views on YouTube and was nominated for the Mercury Prize.

How XL Operates

XL runs a small, selective A&R operation. It signs very few artists but invests deeply in each. Its deals are known for being more artist-friendly than typical major contracts, though terms vary by artist. XL uses Beggars Group's independent distribution network for global reach.

Deal Structure and Royalties

XL's deal terms differ from typical major-label contracts in several ways, though specifics vary by artist:

• Master ownership: XL typically owns masters under standard deals, but has been known to negotiate shared ownership or reversion clauses for established artists. Adele's deal structure has not been publicly disclosed in detail.
• Royalty rates: XL reportedly offers higher royalty rates than major labels (often 25 to 40 percent of net revenue for established acts), reflecting its lower overhead and independent structure.
• Advances: Advances tend to be smaller than major-label deals but are recouped at a faster rate due to higher royalty percentages. XL's selective approach means each signing receives focused budget allocation.

• No 360 deals: XL generally does not require 360 deals (touring, merch, publishing cuts), which is a significant advantage over major-label contracts where those income streams are often shared.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

XL is the example independent artists point to when arguing you do not need a major label to sell tens of millions of records. Adele's entire career was built on XL. If you have a genuinely distinct artistic identity and real early traction, XL is the most prestigious independent target in the UK.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

• Extremely selective: XL signs a tiny number of artists. The odds of getting in cold are near zero.
• No unsolicited demos: XL does not accept demo submissions. You need an A&R relationship or a referral.
• Beggars ownership: XL is now a Beggars subsidiary rather than a joint venture, which changes its governance slightly.
• High bar for distinctiveness: XL signs artists with a clear, developed identity. Generic music will not get attention.
