Ancienne Belgique (AB) is a 2,000-capacity concert hall for contemporary music at Boulevard Anspach 110 in the historic heart of Brussels, Belgium. The venue hosts nearly 400 concerts per year and attracts over 350,000 visitors annually across its three performance spaces. It is one of Belgium's leading concert venues and is operated as a public cultural institution. The AB programs rock, pop, indie, alternative, electronic, hip-hop, and experimental music. It is best suited for independent and mid-tier touring artists who can draw 250 to 2,000 fans in the Brussels market.

History and Architecture

The Ancienne Belgique was originally established as a music hall in 1931 on a site with a history of entertainment dating back further. The name means "Old Belgium" in French. The venue is located on Boulevard Anspach, one of Brussels' central boulevards, in the City of Brussels municipality.

The venue consists of three concert spaces:

  • Main Hall (capacity 2,000): The primary concert hall, considered one of the best-sounding rooms in Belgium. Features a main floor and balcony seating.
  • ABBox (capacity 800): The same physical space as the Main Hall, but rearranged for greater intimacy. The rear seats and side balconies are covered, reducing capacity to 800. The ABBox was created to host less well-known acts and help them reach a larger audience in a more appropriate room size.
  • ABClub (capacity 250): A small room for up-and-coming acts and emerging artists.

The ABBox concept is particularly notable. Rather than forcing a 500-draw artist into a 2,000-capacity room that feels empty, the venue reconfigures the same space to create an intimate 800-capacity environment. This allows the AB to book a wider range of artists while maintaining room energy.

Notable Performances

Jacques Brel supported Bobbejaan Schoepen at the AB for one week in January 1955, early in his career. Suicide performed on June 16, 1978, to a hostile crowd waiting for headliner Elvis Costello. The recorded performance was eventually released as 23 Minutes in Brussels. The Cure played a 1982 concert that ended in a fight between band members on stage, and the band briefly split up afterward.

Around 1986, the AB hosted a popular club night with DJ "Fat" Ronny Harmsen, whose distinctive style (dubbed "AB music" after the club's initials) helped lay the groundwork for the New Beat genre. The Domino festival, held annually from 1999 to 2011, hosted underground artists who later broke into the mainstream.

The Hives' 2004 performance was released as the live DVD Tussles in Brussels. Roisin Murphy released the limited double CD Live at Ancienne Belgique in November 2007. Yeasayer released a live album recorded at the venue on October 28, 2010. AJR performed on October 11, 2022, during their OK Orchestra tour.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

The Ancienne Belgique is a milestone venue for any artist building a following in Belgium and the broader Benelux market. Brussels is a key touring market, and the AB is its most respected concert venue. The three-room structure (ABClub at 250, ABBox at 800, Main Hall at 2,000) allows artists to progress through the venue as their draw grows, similar to the multi-room model at Melkweg in Amsterdam.

For independent artists targeting this venue:

  1. Build your Brussels draw first: Play smaller Belgian venues and document ticket sales. The progression at the AB goes from the ABClub (250 capacity) to the ABBox (800 capacity) to the Main Hall (2,000 capacity). Promoters want to see a clear trajectory of growing ticket sales in Belgium.
  2. Work with Benelux booking agents: The AB books through established promoters and agents. Independent artists should approach through a Belgian or Benelux booking partner. The venue's programming team evaluates streaming numbers, previous Belgian ticket sales, and festival appearances.
  3. Understand the deal economics: A sold-out AB Main Hall at 2,000 tickets with an average price of 30 euros generates approximately 60,000 euros in gross revenue. After the venue's take (typically 15 to 20 percent), production costs, and agent fees (10 to 15 percent), the artist's net depends on the guarantee versus door split structure. Use our tour revenue calculator to model different scenarios.
  4. The ABBox is your friend: If you can draw 500 to 800 people in Brussels, the ABBox configuration gives you a room that feels full and energetic rather than a half-empty 2,000-capacity hall. Request the ABBox configuration when negotiating with promoters if your draw does not justify the full Main Hall.

Potential Drawbacks / Things to Consider

  • No unsolicited submissions: The venue books through agents and promoters. Without a Benelux booking partner, getting a show here is difficult.
  • Central location logistics: The venue is on Boulevard Anspach in a pedestrian-heavy area. Load-in requires coordination with Brussels city services for vehicle access and parking permits.
  • Competitive calendar: Brussels is a major touring market, and the AB calendar fills months in advance. Prime weekend dates are especially competitive with established Benelux artists.
  • Multi-level venue: The Main Hall has balcony seating, which means sightlines vary significantly. Discuss your stage plot and production requirements with the technical team in advance to ensure your show works from all viewing angles.
