View EventsCairo Opera House is the primary performing arts venue in Egypt, located in the National Cultural Centre on Gezira Island in Cairo. Inaugurated in 1988 as a gift from Japan, it replaced the original Khedivial Opera House (1869) that burned down in 1971. The complex hosts opera, classical music, ballet, and Arabic music performances across multiple halls.
History and Architecture
The story of Cairo's opera house begins in 1869, when Khedive Ismail commissioned the Khedivial Opera House to celebrate the opening of the Suez Canal. Designed by Italian architect Pietro Avoscani, it was built in just six months in the Azbakiya district. Verdi's "Rigoletto" opened the venue on November 1, 1869. The world premiere of Verdi's "Aida" followed on December 24, 1871, after delays caused by the Franco-Prussian War.
On October 28, 1971, the all-wooden Khedivial Opera House burned to the ground in an electrical fire. Only two statues by Egyptian artist Mohammed Hassan survived. Cairo was without an opera house for 17 years.
In 1985, Egypt partnered with Japan's International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to build a new National Cultural Centre. Construction began in May 1985 and lasted three years. The new Cairo Opera House was inaugurated on October 10, 1988, by President Hosni Mubarak and Prince Tomohito of Mikasa. It was the first time a Kabuki performance was staged in Africa or the Arab world.
The complex includes the Main Hall (1,200 seats) with state-of-the-art acoustics for grand opera and symphonic concerts, a Small Hall for chamber music and recitals, and an Open-Air Theatre for performances under the Cairo night sky. Exhibition galleries, rehearsal rooms, and sculpture gardens surround the performance spaces.
Notable Performances and Current Season
The Cairo Opera House has hosted performers ranging from Luciano Pavarotti to Tan Dun. The Cairo Symphony Orchestra, now in its 67th season (2025-2026), opened the current season under Maestro Ahmed El-Saedi with a program honoring Shostakovich on the fiftieth anniversary of his passing. Young Egyptian violinist Salma Sorour performed Sibelius' Violin Concerto.
The 2025-2026 season features grand opera, ballet, chamber recitals, Arab music ensembles, and cultural evenings under the theme "Spirits in the City." The venue also hosts the Cairo Opera Ballet Company and the Arabic Music Ensemble, preserving traditional Egyptian music alongside Western classical programming.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
The Cairo Opera House was designed as a space for all Egyptians, not just elite audiences. Its multiple halls provide performance opportunities at different scales, from the 1,200-seat Main Hall to the intimate Small Hall. Conservatory students and emerging artists regularly perform alongside international stars.
For independent artists in Egypt and the broader Middle East, the Cairo Opera House represents a performance destination that can legitimize a career. Building relationships with the venue's programming team and participating in its educational initiatives can open doors.
