View EventsRed Rocks Amphitheatre is a 9,525-capacity open-air venue carved into naturally formed sandstone formations near Morrison, Colorado, about ten miles southwest of Denver. Owned and operated by the City of Denver, it has hosted concerts since 1941 and is widely considered the finest naturally acoustic amphitheater in the world.
History and Geology
The two massive red sandstone monoliths that form the venue's walls, Ship Rock and Creation Rock, are the product of hundreds of millions of years of geologic uplift, erosion, and the rise and fall of inland seas. The sandstone dates back to the Pennsylvanian period, roughly 300 million years ago.
Denver acquired the land in 1928 and hired architect Burnham Hoyt to design an amphitheater that would preserve the natural setting. The Civilian Conservation Corps built the venue between 1935 and 1941 using locally quarried stone. Red Rocks was officially dedicated on June 15, 1941, with a Native American ceremony and selections from the opera "Aida."
The venue was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1990. In 2015, a major renovation added improved seating, new restrooms, expanded concession areas, and a visitor center. The amphitheater sits at 6,450 feet above sea level, which means sound projects naturally off the rock walls with minimal artificial amplification needed.
How the Venue Operates
Red Rocks is a general admission venue with reserved seating in the front rows. The concert season runs from April through November, weather permitting. The City of Denver owns the venue, but live music promoter AEG Presents Rocky Mountains books the majority of concerts. Arts & Venues Denver, the city agency, manages operations and rentals.
The venue hosts approximately 150 events per year, including concerts, fitness programs, film screenings on the Rocks, and private rentals. Tickets sell through AXS and the official Red Rocks website. Parking is free but limited, and the venue strongly recommends rideshare or the Red Rocks Shuttle from downtown Denver.
2026 Season Highlights
The 2026 Red Rocks season is one of the busiest on record, with over 146 shows announced as of July. The calendar runs from April through November and includes The Strokes, Foster the People, LCD Soundsystem, Clipse and J.I.D, GRYFFIN with Oliver Heldens, Atmosphere, SOMBR, and many more. The season also features recurring series like Film on the Rocks and fitness sunrise sessions. Tickets are available through redrocksonline.com and AXS.
Notable Performances
The Beatles performed at Red Rocks on August 26, 1964, one of only a handful of outdoor venues they played in America. Jimi Hendrix played there in 1968. The Grateful Dead performed multiple times throughout the 1970s and 1980s. U2 filmed their iconic "Under a Blood Red Sky" live album and video at Red Rocks in June 1983 during a rainstorm, a performance that cemented the venue's global reputation. Widespread Panic has sold out more consecutive shows there than any other act, with over 50 sold-out performances.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
Red Rocks is not a club venue where an emerging artist can book a Tuesday night. It is a destination amphitheater booked by major promoters. However, the venue's 2026 season includes over 150 shows, and many of those need local or regional openers. An independent artist with a strong Colorado following can target support slots on larger bills.
If you are building a touring strategy that includes the Denver market, research AEG Presents Rocky Mountains and identify which upcoming Red Rocks bills might need an opener in your genre.
