About Eurosonic Noorderslag

ESNS started in 1986 as a Dutch band competition called Noorderslag. Eurosonic was added in 1996 to feature artists from across Europe. The first three days (Eurosonic) feature artists from all over Europe, while the final day (Noorderslag) features only Dutch artists. The conference runs across all four days, with over 520 speakers participating in panel discussions, workshops, and keynotes. Several awards are presented during ESNS, including the Music Moves Europe Talent Awards, the European Festivals Awards, the Buma Cultuur Pop Award (Popprijs), and the Pop Media Award. 2026 Edition in Detail

The 2026 anniversary edition (January 14 to 17) was completely sold out. Queen Maxima opened the festival on Wednesday evening, January 14, at De Oosterpoort. Approximately 300 European acts from a record-setting 39 countries performed across 18 stages in venues throughout Groningen. The 2026 edition dropped the usual country focus in favor of a pan-European theme called "Europe Calling," reflecting post-Brexit solidarity and the European Music Exporters Exchange (EMEE) presence. Over 4,000 artists applied for approximately 350 slots, making the acceptance rate roughly 8.7%. The free-to-access program was the largest in the festival's history, including Grunnsonic (northern talent showcases on the Grote Markt), Platosonic (in-store performances at record shop Plato), the ESNS Popwalk audio walking route, and the "Then and Now" photo exhibition. ESNS 2027 is scheduled for January 13 to 16.
