Ferrer-Salat Music Foundation Scholarships are full four-year tuition awards at the Conservatori Liceu in Barcelona, Spain. They provide 20 scholarships annually to promising young musicians pursuing Bachelor's degrees in Classical, Contemporary, Jazz, Modern Music, and Flamenco Guitar performance.

How Ferrer-Salat Scholarships Work

The Fundacio Ferrer de Musica has partnered with the Conservatori Liceu Foundation for more than a decade. The scholarship program is now in its 17th edition. It has supported over 200 students since its inception.

The foundation offers two types of scholarships:

Four-Year Scholarships: 20 scholarships covering the full cost of four years of higher music studies at the Conservatori Liceu's Higher Education Center. Recipients must demonstrate artistic and academic progress year after year to maintain the scholarship.

Excellence Scholarships: 20 scholarships for students already enrolled at the Conservatori Liceu who have shown outstanding motivation and progress during their studies.

In total, 40 scholarships are awarded each year.

Eligibility requirements for the four-year scholarships:

  • Must have Spanish nationality
  • Must be born after December 31, 1999 for Jazz and Modern Music Performance, Flamenco Guitar Performance, and Classical and Contemporary Music Performance (except Voice)
  • Must be born after December 31, 1997 for the Voice modality within Classical and Contemporary Music Performance
  • Must be born after December 31, 1997 for the Composition specialization
  • Must pass the entrance exams for the Conservatori Liceu

The application process involves submitting documents and videos by March 10. A second phase includes live auditions for Performance candidates and tests for Composition candidates, typically held in early May. Final results are announced in May.

Scholarship recipients also gain access to masterclasses led by internationally renowned musicians and participate in Liceu Jove concerts and Liceu Cambra and Liceu Jazz Masterclasses and Concerts initiatives.

The foundation also offers 30 annual scholarships of 8,000 euros each to musicians of the JONDE (Young National Orchestra of Spain) through an agreement with the National Institute of Performing Arts.

Real-World Example

A 20-year-old Spanish guitarist specializing in flamenco would submit their application documents and a video audition by March 10. If selected for the second phase, they would travel to Barcelona for a live audition in early May. If awarded one of 20 four-year scholarships, their entire Bachelor's degree tuition at the Conservatori Liceu would be covered. The degree normally costs approximately 8,000 euros per year, so the total scholarship value would be approximately 32,000 euros over four years. They would also participate in masterclasses and concerts throughout their studies.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

If you are a Spanish national pursuing a career in music, this is one of the most comprehensive scholarship programs available. Full four-year tuition coverage eliminates the financial barrier to a Bachelor's degree. The Conservatori Liceu is a prestigious institution in Barcelona with strong industry connections.

Submit your application and video materials by the March 10 deadline. Prepare audition pieces that demonstrate both technical skill and artistic personality. If invited to the second phase, treat the live audition as a professional performance. The foundation also funds JONDE scholarships, so if you are a member of the Young National Orchestra of Spain, you may be eligible for an additional 8,000 euros annually.

Drawbacks / Things to Consider

The four-year scholarships require Spanish nationality. Non-Spanish citizens are not eligible for the main scholarship program. Age restrictions apply and vary by specialization. The live audition phase requires travel to Barcelona. The scholarship only covers tuition at the Conservatori Liceu. It does not cover living expenses in Barcelona, which can be significant. Recipients must maintain artistic and academic progress to keep the scholarship from year to year. The Excellence Scholarships are only for students already enrolled at the Conservatori Liceu, not for new applicants.
