Escola Superior de Música de Catalunya (ESMUC) is the only public institution in Catalonia authorized to offer bachelor's and master's degrees in advanced artistic music education. Located at L'Auditori in Barcelona, it opened in 2001 and enrolls over 900 students across classical, contemporary, jazz, flamenco, early music, composition, and music production programs.

Programs and Degrees

ESMUC offers a four-year bachelor's degree in Higher Artistic Education of Music, equivalent to a university degree under the European Higher Education Area. Students choose from specializations including instrumental performance (classical and contemporary, jazz, modern music, early music, flamenco, and traditional Catalan instruments), composition, conducting, musicology, pedagogy, production and management, and sonology.

The school also runs 12 master's programs. These include the Barcelona Jazz Master, Lied "Victoria de los Angeles," Flamencology, Flamenco Performance, Film Scoring and Music for Audiovisual Media, Composition with Technologies, Music Management and Production, Music Therapy, Music Education for Musicians, Music Research, and Management of Arts Education Centres.

ESMUC Junior provides advanced training for young people ages 8 to 17 with high musical abilities.

Admissions and Tuition

Admission requires passing entrance exams. For the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the school has published specific seat counts per specialization. For example, classical and contemporary instruments offer 62 seats, jazz instruments offer 14 seats, modern music instruments offer 10 seats, early music offers 11 seats, and flamenco offers 3 seats. Candidates can apply for up to two specializations.

The admission test costs 80 EUR. The guidance test (Part A) costs 80 EUR, or 100 EUR for Parts A and B combined.

As a public institution, ESMUC has low tuition. Undergraduate students pay 25.04 EUR per ECTS credit. A full bachelor's degree is 240 ECTS credits, totaling approximately 6,010 EUR for the entire program. Master's tuition varies by program, ranging from 41.15 EUR per credit (Flamencology) to 111.12 EUR per credit (Film Scoring).

For the 2026 to 2027 master's admissions, the first application period runs February 2 to March 25, 2026, with acceptance by April 15. The second period runs May 4 to May 24, 2026, with acceptance by June 9.

Real-World Example

A student entering the Barcelona Jazz Master program at ESMUC pays 68.95 EUR per ECTS credit. For a standard 90-credit master's program, total tuition comes to approximately 6,206 EUR. The student gets access to ESMUC's faculty of working jazz professionals, performance opportunities at L'Auditori, and connections to Barcelona's active jazz scene. Compare this to a private conservatory in the United States charging $50,000 or more per year for a similar jazz performance degree.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

ESMUC offers one of the most affordable paths to a recognized music degree in Europe. If you are an independent musician considering studying in Spain, the total undergraduate tuition of roughly 6,010 EUR for four years is lower than a single semester at many private US schools. The school's location in Barcelona provides access to a major European music city with active concert venues, festivals, and industry networks.

The flamenco and traditional Catalan music specializations are unique to ESMUC and not widely available elsewhere. If your work incorporates these traditions, ESMUC is one of the few institutions offering formal accreditation.

For musicians who already have a bachelor's degree, the master's programs in music management and production or film scoring can provide specific industry skills without the cost of a multi-year commitment.
