Learn MoreGuildhall School of Music and Drama is a public conservatory in London founded in 1880, making it one of the oldest music schools in Britain. Located at the Barbican Centre, it offers undergraduate and postgraduate programs in music, acting, and production arts, with over 400 practitioner teachers and partnerships with the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra.
Programs and Degrees
The flagship undergraduate music program is the Bachelor of Music (BMus) Honours degree, a four-year program centered on one-to-one tuition with principal study options in strings, wind, brass, percussion, keyboard, vocal studies, composition, electronic and produced music, and jazz. At least two-thirds of the program focuses on principal study, with a minimum of 30 individual lessons per year combined with over 100 hours of departmental classes, workshops, and projects.
Students can select electives from Year 2 onward to build a bespoke course alongside their principal study. A Joint Principal Study pathway is available for students wanting to major in two instruments or disciplines.
Postgraduate options include Master of Music (MMus), Master of Performance (MPerf), Master of Composition (MComp), Artist Diploma, Advanced Certificate, MA in Opera Making and Writing, MA in Music Therapy, and doctoral research degrees (MPhil, DMus, PhD).
The school also offers BA Acting, BA Production Arts, BA Performance Design, and BA Digital Design and Production programs.
The Milton Court facility, opened in 2013 at a cost of 90 million GBP, houses a 608-seat concert hall, a 223-seat theatre, and a studio theatre with up to 128 seats.
Admissions and Tuition
Applications are made directly through the Guildhall website, not through UCAS. The BMus application deadline for September 2026 entry was October 2, 2025. The application fee is 127 GBP, though eligible undergraduate applicants can apply for free through the Supported Application Scheme.
Tuition fees for 2025 to 2026:
- BMus (Home students): 9,535 GBP per year
- BMus (International students): 26,490 GBP per year
- BA Acting (Home): 9,535 GBP per year
- BA Acting (International): 24,980 GBP per year
For 2026 to 2027, the Home undergraduate fee increases to 9,790 GBP per year, as confirmed by the UK government.
The school offers means-tested financial support, scholarships awarded on the basis of talent and financial need, and government tuition fee loans for eligible Home students. International undergraduate entrants must pay a 15 percent non-refundable deposit by July 15, 2026.
Real-World Example
A UK student enrolling in the BMus program in September 2026 pays 9,790 GBP per year. Over four years, total tuition comes to 39,160 GBP. The student receives weekly one-to-one lessons with a professor from Guildhall's faculty of 400-plus practitioner teachers, performs in venues including the Barbican and Milton Court concert hall, and gains exposure through partnerships with the London Symphony Orchestra and BBC Symphony Orchestra. Notable music alumni include bass-baritone Sir Bryn Terfel, mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter, baritone Roderick Williams, and jazz singer Zara McFarlane.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
Guildhall offers world-class conservatory training in the heart of London. If you are a serious musician aiming for a professional performance career, the one-to-one tuition model and performance opportunities at major London venues provide direct industry exposure.
The electronic and produced music principal study is relatively new and reflects how conservatories are adapting to contemporary music production. If you produce electronic music but want formal conservatory training, this pathway bridges both worlds.
The Supported Application Scheme is worth investigating if cost is a barrier. It covers the application fee and provides workshops, advice, and audition travel bursaries for eligible applicants from backgrounds underrepresented in higher education.
Guildhall ranked first for Arts, Drama, and Music in the Complete University Guide 2025, which adds weight to a degree from this institution when approaching agents, orchestras, and employers.
