Geffen Records is a Universal Music Group imprint founded in 1980 by David Geffen. It now operates within the Interscope Capitol Labels Group, based in Santa Monica. Geffen's current roster includes Olivia Rodrigo, KATSEYE, Counting Crows, and Yeat, and its catalog includes Guns N' Roses, Elton John (US/Canada), and Sonic Youth. As of 2024, Geffen is part of UMG's Interscope Capitol Labels Group.

Geffen has a long history of signing global superstars. In the 1980s and 1990s it was home to Guns N' Roses, Nirvana (via DGC), and Aerosmith. The modern label has become a streaming-era powerhouse with Olivia Rodrigo, whose albums Sour and Guts were defining pop records of the 2020s. Geffen also partners with HYBE for K-pop, releasing solo work from BTS members (J-Hope, Jimin, Jin, Jungkook) and the global girl group KATSEYE (a HYBE x Geffen joint venture).

How Geffen Operates

Geffen runs dedicated A&R within the Interscope Capitol Labels Group. It operates sub-labels including Alamo Records (Lil Durk, Yeat), Darkroom Records (Billie Eilish's label with Finneas, also marketing and business development for Interscope), and Rebel Records. Its HYBE partnership gives it a major K-pop pipeline. Distribution flows through UMG globally.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

Geffen is a primary UMG target for pop, rock, and hip-hop artists. Its success with Olivia Rodrigo shows it can break a new artist into global stardom quickly. The HYBE partnership makes it a relevant target for K-pop artists or K-pop-adjacent pop acts seeking a US label partner.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • Master ownership: Geffen (via UMG) owns your masters under a standard deal.
  • Group structure: Geffen operates within the Interscope Capitol Labels Group, so strategy is coordinated with Interscope and Capitol.
  • No unsolicited demos: You need representation or an A&R relationship.
  • K-pop partnership is HYBE-driven: The K-pop pipeline flows through HYBE, not direct Geffen signings.

Geffen Records History

David Geffen founded Geffen Records in 1980 as a subsidiary of Geffen Pictures, with Warner Bros. Records providing full funding and distribution. The label's first release was Donna Summer's The Wanderer (September 1980), followed by John Lennon and Yoko Ono's Double Fantasy (November 1980). In 1990, Geffen sold the label to MCA Music Entertainment, which later became Universal Music Group. In 1999, Geffen was merged into the Interscope Geffen A&M group. The label absorbed the entire MCA Records catalog in 2003 when the MCA name was retired, and also absorbed DGC and DreamWorks Records that same year. Geffen was relaunched in 2017 under Interscope Geffen A&M CEO John Janick. Since 2024, Geffen has operated within UMG's Interscope Capitol Labels Group.

Deal Structure and Royalties

Geffen operates within the Interscope Capitol Labels Group under standard UMG major-label deal structures. The terms below describe what a typical Geffen recording contract looks like.

Master Ownership

Under a standard Geffen deal, the label (via UMG) owns the master recordings permanently. This is consistent across all UMG imprints. Olivia Rodrigo's recordings, for example, are owned by Geffen Records under exclusive license from the artist. Artists do not retain master ownership unless they negotiate specific terms, which is rare for new signings. The HYBE partnership adds a layer of complexity for K-pop acts, where master ownership may be shared between HYBE and Geffen depending on the specific joint venture agreement.

Royalty Rates

New artists signing to Geffen typically receive a royalty rate between 12% and 18% of the applicable base price. Established artists with proven sales can negotiate rates of 18% to 22% or higher. The royalty calculation includes standard deductions for packaging, breakage, and new technology reductions for streaming. Streaming royalties are calculated as a percentage of UMG's net revenue from each platform, after the platform's own commission is deducted.

Advances and Recoupment

Geffen pays recording advances that function as pre-payments against future royalties. For a new pop signing, advances typically range from $100,000 to $500,000. Artists with existing traction or competitive bidding situations can command advances in the millions. All recoupable costs (recording budget, producer fees, video production, certain marketing expenses) are deducted from the artist's royalty account before any additional payments are made.

Cross-collateralization is standard. If an artist's first album does not recoup, the deficit carries forward to the second album. This means even a hit second album may not produce royalty checks if the first album's losses were substantial. Entertainment attorneys routinely negotiate limits on cross-collateralization, sometimes securing per-album accounting that isolates each album's recoupment.

360 Deals

Geffen requires 360 deals for most new signings, consistent with UMG policy. The label takes a percentage of non-recording revenue:

  • Touring: 10% to 20% of net touring income (artists with leverage can cap this at 10% to 15%)
  • Merchandise: 15% to 25% of merchandise revenue (direct-to-fan sales are sometimes excluded)
  • Publishing: Sometimes included in the 360 package, though artists with publishing leverage keep this separate
  • Brand deals and endorsements: 10% to 20%

For K-pop acts under the HYBE partnership, the 360 structure may differ since HYBE manages touring, merchandise, and other revenue streams through its own ecosystem. Geffen's role in those cases is primarily US and global distribution and marketing.

Distribution Network

Geffen releases flow through Universal Music Group's global distribution network, covering over 60 countries. UMG handles physical manufacturing and distribution (CDs, vinyl) and direct digital distribution to all major streaming platforms. Geffen's sub-labels (Alamo Records, Darkroom Records, Rebel Records, Field Trip) also use UMG distribution. The HYBE partnership adds HYBE's own distribution and marketing infrastructure in Asia, with Geffen handling the rest of the world.
