Merge Records is an American independent label founded in 1989 by Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. It is home to Arcade Fire, Spoon, The Magnetic Fields, Superchunk, Waxahatchee, Hiss Golden Messenger, Destroyer, and many others. In 2025, Secretly Group acquired a stake in Merge Records, bringing the label into the Secretly orbit while preserving its independence. Merge is distributed by Alternative Distribution Alliance (ADA, part of Warner Music Group).

Merge built its reputation on the 1990s indie rock scene. Its co-founders, Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance, are also members of Superchunk, one of the label's flagship acts. Merge's signings of Arcade Fire (whose Funeral became one of the most acclaimed indie rock albums of the 2000s), Spoon (whose prolific output established them as one of the most consistent indie rock acts), and The Magnetic Fields (whose 69 Love Songs is a landmark of indie pop) made the label one of the most respected independents in the world. The modern roster includes Waxahatchee, Hiss Golden Messenger, and Destroyer, representing continued investment in artist-driven indie rock and folk.

Arcade Fire's "Rebellion (Lies)" was the first music video the band made, filmed in the months before the release of Funeral in September 2004. The remastered version, uploaded to the band's VEVO channel in 2019 for the album's 15th anniversary, has accumulated over 7 million views. Funeral was released on Merge Records (catalog number MRG 255) and went on to sell over 500,000 copies in the US alone.

How Merge Operates

Merge Records runs dedicated A&R under co-founders Mac McCaughan and Laura Ballance from its Chapel Hill headquarters. It is distributed by ADA (Warner Music Group), giving it major-distribution reach while remaining independently owned. Following the 2025 Secretly Group stake acquisition, Merge continues to operate independently while benefiting from Secretly's infrastructure. The label's strength is its 35-year history of artist-driven curation and its track record of signing artists who define indie rock movements.

Deal Structures and Royalties

Merge operates on standard independent label terms with ADA distribution. Typical deal structures include:

  • Traditional recording deal: Merge funds recording, marketing, and distribution through ADA. Artists receive an advance against royalties. Independent label royalty rates typically range from 18% to 25% of suggested retail price, higher than major-label rates but with smaller advances.
  • Master ownership: Merge typically owns master recordings for the deal term. As an independently owned label (even with the Secretly Group stake), Merge has a history of artist-friendly terms and long-term relationships.
  • Creative control: Merge is known for giving artists significant creative latitude. The label does not impose A&R-driven commercial direction, which is why artists like Spoon and Arcade Fire have built their catalogs on the label.
  • Secretly Group infrastructure: Following the 2025 stake acquisition, Merge benefits from Secretly Group's shared services (marketing, sync licensing, international coordination) while maintaining its own A&R and release schedule.
  • ADA distribution: Merge releases are distributed globally through ADA (Warner Music Group's independent distribution arm), giving the label major-label distribution reach without major-label ownership.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

If you make indie rock, indie pop, or folk with a distinct artistic identity, Merge Records is one of the most respected independent labels in the world, with a 35-year track record. Its signings of Arcade Fire, Spoon, and The Magnetic Fields show it can develop artists who achieve both critical and commercial success. The 2025 Secretly Group stake gives Merge access to additional infrastructure while preserving its independence.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • Highly selective: Merge signs very few artists each year.
  • No unsolicited demos: Merge does not accept cold submissions.
  • Indie aesthetic: The label has a distinct indie rock and pop aesthetic. Music outside that aesthetic will not fit.
  • Secretly Group stake: The 2025 Secretly Group investment means Merge is now connected to the Secretly orbit, which may affect deal structures.
