Mute Records

Mute Records is a British independent electronic and alternative label founded in 1978 by Daniel Miller in London. It built the careers of Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, and Kraftwerk. Mute operates as two entities: Mute Artists Ltd. (the independent label founded in 2010, distributed by PIAS Group worldwide and ADA in North America) and Mute Records Ltd. (the catalog, owned by BMG since 2013, with Universal Music Group handling physical distribution from 2023 onward and BMG handling digital).

Mute's history is foundational to electronic and alternative music. Daniel Miller founded the label with his own single as The Normal ("T.V.O.D." / "Warm Leatherette"), and the label went on to sign Depeche Mode, Yazoo, Erasure, and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. In 2010, Miller reached an agreement with EMI to take the Mute brand independent again as Mute Artists Ltd., with EMI retaining the catalog. When UMG acquired EMI in 2012, BMG bought the Mute back catalog in December 2012 as part of the regulator-forced sale of EMI assets. Current Mute artists like Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, and Goldfrapp remained signed to and marketed by EMI (then UMG), while Erasure and Nick Cave moved to Miller's independent label.

Mute Artists Ltd. runs a small, selective A&R operation under Daniel Miller. It is distributed by PIAS Group worldwide and ADA in North America, giving it global independent distribution. The label signs artists with a distinct experimental, electronic, or alternative identity. Mute Records Ltd. (the catalog) is owned by BMG, with UMG handling physical distribution from 2023 and BMG handling digital. The label employs around 20 people across offices in the UK and US.
