Sony Music Latin (Sony Music Entertainment US Latin LLC) is an American Latin music label owned by Sony Music Entertainment, based in Miami, Florida. Founded in 1980 as CBS Discos (after CBS Records ended its partnership with Caytronics), it is one of the leading Latin music labels in the world. Its roster includes Shakira, Maluma, Ozuna, Romeo Santos, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias, Camilo, Carlos Vives, Rauw Alejandro, Fuerza Regida, Becky G, Christian Nodal, Manuel Turizo, Tini, Thalia, and many others. Alex Gallardo serves as President.
Sony Music Latin has a complex history. In 1988, CBS Records was acquired by Sony and its Latin division was renamed to Sony Discos in 1991. In 2003, Sony Discos was rebranded as Sony Norte following the departure of former Sony Discos president Oscar Llord. A year later, Bertelsmann Music Group (BMG) merged with Sony Music and Sony Norte was renamed to Sony BMG Norte. After BMG sold its assets in 2008, Sony BMG Norte was retitled to its current name Sony Music Latin in 2009. The label's roster spans the full spectrum of Latin music, from Latin pop (Shakira, Ricky Martin, Enrique Iglesias) to reggaeton (Maluma, Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro) to regional Mexican (Fuerza Regida, Christian Nodal) to bachata (Romeo Santos).
How Sony Music Latin Operates
Sony Music Latin runs dedicated A&R under President Alex Gallardo from its Miami headquarters. It is self-distributed in the US and distributed by Sony Music outside the US, giving it global reach through Sony's international network. The label's strength is its roster of Latin superstars across multiple genres and its global distribution through Sony Music. Its signings span the Spanish-speaking world, from Puerto Rico (Ozuna, Rauw Alejandro) to Colombia (Maluma, Camilo, Carlos Vives) to the US (Becky G, Fuerza Regida).
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
If you make Latin music of any genre, Sony Music Latin is one of the leading Latin music labels in the world, with a roster of global superstars and Sony's global distribution. Its signings across Latin pop, reggaeton, regional Mexican, bachata, and salsa show it covers the full spectrum of Latin music. Its Miami headquarters places it at the center of the Latin music industry.
Drawbacks and Things to Consider
- Master ownership: Sony Music Latin (via Sony) owns your masters under a standard deal.
- Latin focus: Sony Music Latin signs Latin music. Artists in other genres should look to other Sony imprints.
- No unsolicited demos: Sony Music Latin does not accept cold submissions.
- Major label complexity: Sony Music Latin is part of Sony Music Entertainment, which means deal structures involve corporate layers.
