Verve Records

Verve Records is an American jazz label founded in 1956 by Norman Granz in New York, now part of Concord (acquired from Universal Music Group in 2023). It is one of the most historic jazz labels in the world. Verve is home to Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Nina Simone, and Dizzy Gillespie (all catalog). Verve's acquisition by Concord in 2023 brought its historic catalog into the Concord group, making Concord one of the largest jazz catalog owners in the world. The Verve Label Group also includes Impulse! Records (home to John Coltrane's classic quartet albums) and Verve Forecast.

Verve was founded by Norman Granz, the legendary jazz producer and manager of Ella Fitzgerald and Oscar Peterson. The label's catalog includes some of the most important jazz recordings of the 20th century: Ella Fitzgerald's Songbook series, Billie Holiday's later recordings, Stan Getz's bossa nova albums (Getz/Gilberto), and the Impulse! recordings of John Coltrane (A Love Supreme, Ascension). The 2023 Concord acquisition brought these catalogs into an independent group, ending UMG's ownership of the Verve catalog.

How Verve Operates

Verve Records operates as a catalog label within the Concord group. It does not sign new artists in the traditional sense. Its value is in its historic catalog (Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, Stan Getz, Oscar Peterson, Nina Simone, John Coltrane via Impulse!). Concord acquired Verve Label Group from UMG in 2023, bringing the Verve, Impulse!, Decca, Deutsche Grammophon (US), and ECM (US distribution) catalogs into Concord. Verve's catalog is managed, reissued, and licensed by Concord's Craft Recordings division.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

Verve Records is not a signing target for new artists. Its relevance is for artists with existing jazz catalog material who want a meticulously managed reissue or licensing arrangement. If you have archival jazz recordings, the Concord group (which now owns Verve) is one of the most respected jazz catalog owners in the world.
