The Enmore Theatre is a 2,500-capacity live performance venue at 118 to 132 Enmore Road in Newtown, Sydney. Opened in 1912 as a photo-play theatre screening silent films, it is the longest-running live theatre in Sydney. The venue hosts concerts, comedy, plays, and all forms of performance. It holds 1,700 people when fully seated and 2,500 when seats are removed for standing shows. It is best suited for mid-to-large touring acts and established independent artists who can draw 1,000-plus tickets in Sydney.

History and Architecture

The Szarka Brothers (William and George) opened the venue in 1912 as a cinema. In 1920, architects Kaberry and Chard renovated the theatre in the Inter-war Spanish Mission style at a cost of 24,000 pounds. Hoyts Theatres purchased the venue in 1936 and completely rebuilt it in 1937 in the Art Deco style, designed by Charles Bohringer and Associates. This Art Deco design is what the venue retains today, and it is the only Sydney theatre from the Art Deco movement still in its original condition.

The cinema closed in 1967 and reopened in 1969 as the Finos Theatre, screening Greek films to the local Greek community. In the 1980s, the Australian Elizabethan Theatre Trust took control and spent $500,000 restoring the venue for live performances. It reopened in 1985 under its original name. Showcall Pty Ltd took over management in 1991 and spent over $2 million redesigning the venue.

The building is classified by the National Trust and listed as a local heritage item by the Inner West Council. It is registered in the historic buildings of the Australian Institute of Architects.

Notable Performances

The Enmore has hosted Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Kiss, Sonic Youth, The Ramones, Nick Cave, The White Stripes, The Cranberries, Mark Knopfler, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, Gang of Youths, Vance Joy, and many others. The venue also hosts major comedy acts including Tom Gleeson, Kitty Flanagan, Daniel Tosh, and Lano and Woodley. It has been a primary venue for the Sydney Comedy Festival.

On March 3, 2022, during a sold-out Genesis Owusu show, the dance floor collapsed two songs into his set. No one was injured. The concert was rescheduled and the floor was repaired the following day.

How the Venue Operates

Century Venues owns and operates the Enmore Theatre. The venue has three licensed bars, a cloakroom ($3 per item), and a box office that opens two hours before any performance. The venue is air-conditioned. Smoking is not permitted inside.

The closest train station is Newtown Station, a 5-minute walk. Parking in the area is limited. Multiple bus routes run from the Sydney CBD to Newtown and Enmore. The venue is surrounded by cafes, restaurants, and bars along King Street and Enmore Road.

Tickets are sold through the venue's box office and major ticketing platforms. The venue hosts approximately 200 events per year across music, comedy, and other performances.

2026 Programming

The 2026 calendar includes the King Street Crawl event (July 12, 2026, featuring Tropical Fuck Storm and Winston Surfshirt), regular comedy nights, and touring international and Australian acts. The venue continues to program across rock, indie, alternative, comedy, and children's entertainment. Check the official website for current events.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

The Enmore Theatre is one of Sydney's primary mid-sized venues. For independent artists, selling out the Enmore (1,700 seated or 2,500 standing) is a significant achievement that demonstrates strong drawing power in the Sydney market. Artists who reach this venue have typically graduated from smaller Sydney rooms like the Factory Theatre (500 capacity) or the Metro Theatre (1,200 capacity).

The venue's location in Newtown, one of Sydney's key arts and entertainment hubs, means it attracts an engaged and culturally active audience. The theatre's prestige in the Sydney scene means a headline show here gets attention from booking agents, festival programmers, and media.

For international independent artists touring Australia, the Enmore is a standard target for the Sydney leg, alongside the Metro Theatre. Read our international touring guide for routing strategies.

Drawbacks and Things to Consider

  • The dance floor collapse in March 2022, while repaired quickly, highlighted the age of the building. The venue is over 110 years old and requires ongoing maintenance.
  • Parking is extremely limited in Newtown. Attendees should use public transport. For artists loading in equipment, loading dock access must be arranged in advance.
  • The venue's heritage listing restricts modifications. Production capabilities are good but not as flexible as a purpose-built modern venue.
  • The 2,500 standing capacity drops to 1,700 seated. For artists whose audience prefers seated shows, the effective capacity is lower.
  • The venue is in a residential area. Noise restrictions apply, and late-night events are subject to council regulations.
