The Forum (also known as Forum Melbourne) is a historic live music and events venue at 154 Flinders Street in Melbourne, Australia. Opened in 1929 as the State Theatre, it features an atmospheric interior with a cerulean blue ceiling designed to mimic an outdoor night sky. The venue has a standing capacity of 2,000 in Forum I (downstairs) and 520 seated in Forum II (upstairs).

History and Architecture

Architect John Eberson designed the Forum in the atmospheric theatre style, where the auditorium simulates an open-air courtyard under a starlit sky. The building opened on February 23, 1929, as the largest cinema in Australia at the time, seating over 3,000 patrons.

The venue underwent major changes in 1963 when Greater Union converted the single auditorium into two separate cinemas. The dress circle balcony was sealed off to create the Rapallo Theatre upstairs, while the stalls level retained the Forum name. In 1985, the building was purchased by Revival Centres International and used for religious services, falling into disrepair.

In 1995, David Marriner's Staged Developments Australia purchased and redeveloped the building as a live music and concert venue. A major renovation in 2016 restored many original features, including uncovering mosaic tile entrances, repairing statues, and moving interior walls back to their 1929 positions. The Forum officially reopened on September 5, 2017.

The Forum is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register and is part of the Marriner Group portfolio, which also includes Melbourne's Princess Theatre, Regent Theatre, and Comedy Theatre.

Notable Events and Awards

The Forum has been a primary venue for the Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the Melbourne International Film Festival. From 2009 to 2012, it served as the main contemporary music venue for the Melbourne Festival, hosting scores of international and national artists.

The venue has won multiple industry awards for its programming and operations:

  • 2019: Best Venue (Over 500 Capacity) at the Music Victoria Awards
  • 2020: Best Venue (Over 500 Capacity) at the Music Victoria Awards
  • 2022: Best Large Venue (Metro) at the Music Victoria Awards

The Forum hosts approximately 150 events per year across live music, comedy, film screenings, and corporate functions. Forum I (downstairs) features a large unobstructed floor space with adjustable flooring at the rear, accommodating general admission standing events up to 2,000 and seated events up to 800. Forum II (upstairs) offers 520 tiered seats with a small thrust stage and cinema screen.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

The Forum occupies a specific niche in Melbourne's live music ecosystem: the 1,500 to 2,000 capacity tier. Artists reaching this venue have typically graduated from smaller Melbourne rooms like the Corner Hotel (800 capacity) or the Northcote Theatre (1,500 capacity). The Forum's booking is handled through the Marriner Group, with most concert bookings arranged through major touring agents.

Independent artists targeting the Forum should demonstrate proven ticket sales in Melbourne at smaller venues. The venue's split-level design (Forum I and Forum II) means smaller acts can be booked into the 520-seat upstairs space, providing a professional theatre environment without requiring a 2,000-capacity draw.

Melbourne is Australia's live music capital, and the Forum is one of its most recognizable rooms. For international independent artists touring Australia, the Forum is a strong target venue for the Melbourne leg of a tour.
