The Roxy Theatre is a 500-capacity rock club at 9009 Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, California, opened on September 20, 1973, by Elmer Valentine and Lou Adler with partners David Geffen, Elliot Roberts, and Peter Asher. It is one of the three foundational Sunset Strip music venues, alongside the Whisky a Go Go and the Rainbow Bar and Grill.

History and Architecture

Elmer Valentine had already opened the Whisky a Go Go in 1964 and helped establish the Sunset Strip as a live music destination. When he and Lou Adler launched The Roxy in 1973, they converted a former nightclub space into a 500-seat room with a low stage, excellent sightlines, and a standing area at the back. The intimate layout means no seat is more than 50 feet from the stage.

Neil Young opened the venue with six performances over the first three nights, backed by the Santa Monica Flyers. Between those opening shows and the end of 1973, the Roxy hosted Bruce Springsteen (who played a legendary five-night run in May 1975 just as "Born to Run" was breaking nationally), Guns N' Roses in their pre-fame club days, Miles Davis, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, and countless others.

The Rocky Horror Show had its first American run at The Roxy, opening in March 1974 and running for nine months before transitioning to film production. The venue also hosted the US premiere of the stage production.

Lou Adler's son, Nic Adler, currently operates the venue. The Roxy celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2023 with a Grammy Museum exhibition and a series of special performances. The venue underwent a renovation in 2016 that upgraded the sound system, lighting, and backstage areas while preserving the original room layout.

How the Venue Operates

The Roxy books approximately 200 shows per year. It is a general admission venue with a mix of seated and standing space. Tickets typically sell through AXS and the venue's official website. The room is small enough that shows regularly sell out, especially for established acts playing "intimate" surprise sets.

Adjacent to the main room is On The Rox, a private bar and event space on the second floor that hosts after-parties, industry showcases, and private events. The venue is accessible via Metro bus lines serving the Sunset Strip area. Street parking is limited, and rideshare is the recommended option.

2026 Season Highlights

The 2026 calendar includes a year-round schedule of rock, punk, alternative, and metal shows. Recent and upcoming acts include Vick Vapors (July 31, 2026) and a full slate of emerging and mid-tier touring bands. The venue continues to function as a showcase room for labels and management companies testing new signings in front of industry audiences. Tickets are available through theroxy.com and AXS.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

The Roxy is a proving ground. It is the kind of venue where a label books a new signing for a showcase night, or where a touring mid-tier band plays a sold-out intimate show to build buzz. For an independent artist, a Roxy booking signals that you have industry traction in Los Angeles.

The venue works with independent promoters and label showcase events, which means there are realistic pathways to a booking if you have a strong LA following or industry representation.
