BPM (Beats Per Minute) is the standard unit for measuring musical tempo. It tells you how many beats occur in one minute of playback. A song at 120 BPM has 120 beats per minute, which means each beat lasts exactly 500 milliseconds (60,000 ms / 120 = 500 ms). BPM governs every timing-dependent decision in production, from delay times to reverb decay to sidechain compression rates. Genre conventions are tied to BPM ranges. Hip-hop sits around 70 to 90 BPM. House music sits between 120 and 130 BPM. Drum and bass runs at 160 to 180 BPM.

How BPM Works

BPM defines the speed of the pulse in a piece of music. In a DAW, the BPM setting controls the timeline grid, the metronome click, and the duration of musical note values. At 120 BPM, a quarter note lasts 500 milliseconds, an eighth note lasts 250 milliseconds, and a sixteenth note lasts 125 milliseconds. Every time-based effect in your mix can be calculated from these values.

BPM also drives MIDI clock synchronization. When you send MIDI clock from your DAW to external hardware, the devices lock to the same tempo and stay in sync. This is how drum machines, sequencers, and arpeggiators stay locked to your project BPM without manual adjustment.

Common BPM ranges by genre:

  • Hip-hop and trap: 70 to 95 BPM (often half-time feel at 140 to 160)

  • Drum and bass: 160 to 180 BPM

Real-World Example

A producer starts a house track at 124 BPM. They want a quarter-note delay on the vocal. They calculate 60,000 / 124 = 483.9 milliseconds and set the delay time accordingly. The delay repeats lock perfectly to the beat.

They add reverb on the snare and want the tail to clear before the next beat. They set the reverb decay to 483 milliseconds (one quarter note). The snare reverb dies out exactly as the next beat hits, keeping the mix clean.

They then add a sidechain compressor on the bass, triggered by the kick drum. They set the release time to 483 milliseconds so the bass pumps in sync with the tempo. The entire groove locks together because every timing parameter derives from the same BPM value.
