How Flanger and Phaser Works
Flanger
A flanger splits the input signal into two paths. The dry path passes through unchanged. The wet path goes through a modulated delay line set to 1 to 5 ms. An LFO continuously varies the delay time within this range. The delayed signal is mixed back with the dry signal, and a portion of the output is fed back into the input (feedback control).
When two identical signals are mixed with a 1 to 5 ms delay, they create comb filtering. Certain frequencies cancel out while others reinforce, creating a series of peaks and notches in the frequency spectrum. As the delay time modulates, these peaks and notches sweep up and down the frequency range. This produces the characteristic jet-engine whoosh. Higher feedback settings intensify the effect, creating resonant peaks that sound almost like a resonant filter sweep.
Phaser
A phaser works differently. It does not use a delay line. Instead, it routes the signal through a series of all-pass filters. All-pass filters shift the phase of specific frequencies without changing their amplitude. When the phase-shifted signal is mixed with the dry signal, frequencies that are 180 degrees out of phase cancel out, creating notches in the frequency response.
An LFO modulates the center frequencies of the all-pass filters, causing the notches to sweep up and down. A phaser with four stages creates two notches. A phaser with eight stages creates four notches. More stages produce a richer, more complex sweep. The feedback control on a phaser feeds some of the output back into the input, intensifying the resonance at the notch frequencies.
The sonic difference is distinct. A flanger produces a tight, metallic sweep with many closely spaced peaks and notches (comb filtering). A phaser produces a smoother, more organic sweep with fewer, wider notches. Flangers sound dramatic and aggressive. Phasers sound subtle and psychedelic.
Both effects are related to the chorus effect, which uses the same modulated delay principle but with longer delay times (15 to 30 ms) and no feedback. The delay time is the primary parameter that distinguishes all three effects.
Real-World Example
An independent producer working on a synthwave track wants to add motion to a static sawtooth pad. They try both effects to hear the difference.
First, they insert a flanger plugin on the pad. They set the delay time to 2 ms, rate to 0.3 Hz, depth to 80%, and feedback to 60%. The pad immediately gets a dramatic, metallic sweep. The sound is aggressive and attention-grabbing. It works for a short breakdown section but feels too intense for the full track.
Next, they swap the flanger for a phaser plugin. They set the stages to 6, rate to 0.2 Hz, depth to 70%, and feedback to 30%. The pad gets a smooth, undulating sweep. The effect is present but not overwhelming. It adds movement without distracting from the melody. The producer keeps the phaser on the pad and saves the flanger for a two-bar transition effect later in the track.

Flangers and phasers are powerful tools for adding motion to static sounds. They can transform a boring synth pad into a living, breathing texture. They can make a clean guitar sound psychedelic. They can create transition effects between song sections.

Use phasers for subtle motion. A phaser with a slow rate (0.1 to 0.5 Hz) and moderate depth (40 to 60%) adds gentle movement to pads, clean guitars, and electric pianos. This is the sound of 1970s funk and soul. It works well as an insert effect on individual tracks.

Use flangers for dramatic accents. A flanger with high feedback (50 to 80%) creates an attention-grabbing sweep. Use it on short sections: transitions, breakdowns, or single instrumental hits. Avoid leaving a heavy flanger running through an entire song. It causes listener fatigue and competes with vocals for attention.

Automate the mix parameter. Instead of leaving the effect at a static mix level, automate it. Start with 0% mix during the verse. Ramp up to 50% during a breakdown. Drop back to 0% when the chorus hits. Automation makes the effect feel intentional rather than constant. Most DAWs support plugin parameter automation with zero additional cost.
Watch for phase cancellation issues. Both effects manipulate phase, which can cause mono compatibility problems. Check your mix in mono.
