Gain staging is the practice of setting and managing audio signal levels at every point in your signal chain. You adjust the input level of each processor, plugin, and bus so the signal stays in a healthy range. Good gain staging keeps the signal well above the noise floor and well below clipping. It gives you maximum headroom and the cleanest possible sound.
How Gain Staging Works
Every audio signal has a level measured in decibels (dB). As a signal travels through your signal chain, it passes through multiple stages. Each stage can boost or cut the level. A microphone preamp boosts the mic signal. An EQ plugin may add or cut gain. A compressor applies makeup gain. A bus fader sets the final level. Each of these points is a gain stage.
If any stage receives too much signal, it clips. Clipping means the signal exceeds the maximum representable level and the waveform gets squared off. This creates harsh distortion. If any stage receives too little signal, the signal sits close to the noise floor. When you later raise the level, you raise the noise along with it. The result is a hissy, noisy recording.
Good gain staging keeps the signal in the sweet spot at every stage. In the analog world, the sweet spot is around 0 dBVU, which leaves roughly 20 dB of headroom. In the digital world, where 0 dBFS is the absolute ceiling, the sweet spot is around -18 to -12 dBFS. This leaves 12 to 18 dB of headroom before clipping.
The signal chain matters because plugins are calibrated. Most plugin developers design their processors to receive signal at around -18 dBFS. If you feed a plugin a signal at -3 dBFS, the plugin behaves differently than intended. Compressors react too aggressively. EQs sound harsh. Saturation plugins distort too much. The plugin is not broken. You are feeding it the wrong level.
Three common gain staging mistakes:

Recording too hot: Beginners often record at -3 to -6 dBFS for maximum resolution. At 24-bit bit depth, you have 144 dB of dynamic range. Recording at -18 dBFS wastes none of it. Recording at -3 dBFS risks clipping if the performer gets louder.

Ignoring plugin input and output gain: Many plugins have input and output gain controls. If the input is too hot, the plugin processes incorrectly. If the output is too hot, you clip the next plugin. Match input and output levels so the plugin processes at its intended operating level.

Mixing into a master bus that is too loud: If your individual tracks all peak near 0 dBFS, your master bus clips. You then insert a limiter to catch the peaks, which squashes the mix. Proper gain staging prevents this.
Real-World Example
An independent artist records a vocal at home. They set their audio interface preamp so the vocal peaks at -6 dBFS. The singer gets louder on the chorus and peaks hit 0 dBFS. Three words clip and are ruined. The artist has to re-record.
On the next take, the artist sets the preamp so the vocal peaks at -18 dBFS. The loudest chorus moments hit -12 dBFS. There is 12 dB of headroom. No clipping occurs. The recording sounds clean.
During mixing, the artist inserts an EQ plugin on the vocal. The input level is -18 dBFS, which is ideal. Next, they insert a compressor. The compressor adds 4 dB of makeup gain. The output is now -14 dBFS. Still healthy.
They route the vocal to a vocal bus. The bus receives the vocal at -14 dBFS. They add reverb and delay sends. The bus output peaks at -8 dBFS.
The master bus receives all tracks (drums at -12, bass at -14, vocals at -8, synths at -15). The combined master bus peaks at -4 dBFS. There is 4 dB of headroom. The artist inserts a gentle compressor on the master bus and a limiter at the end. The limiter catches the occasional peak and the final output hits -14 LUFS for streaming. No clipping anywhere in the chain.
Why It Matters for Independent Artists
Gain staging is the foundation of a clean mix. If your gain staging is wrong, no amount of EQ, compression, or saturation can fix the damage. Clipping at the input stage is permanent. Noise from low input levels is permanent. Getting the levels right at the source saves hours of troubleshooting later.
Practical advice for independent artists:
- Record at -18 to -12 dBFS: Set your preamp so the loudest moments peak in this range. At 24-bit depth, you have more than enough resolution. The headroom protects against unexpected peaks.
- Check every plugin input and output: Click the bypass button on each plugin. The output level should match the input level. If the plugin changes the level significantly, adjust its input or output gain to compensate.
- Keep your master bus below -6 dBFS: Before mastering, your mix should peak no higher than -6 dBFS. This gives the mastering engineer (or your mastering plugin) room to work.
- Use trim plugins: If a recorded track is too hot, insert a trim plugin at the start of the chain. Lower the level before it hits any other processor. This fixes the level without re-recording.
