How Opera America Discovery Grants Work

All applications must be submitted through Opera America's Grants Portal. Applicants must review the published guidelines, intent to apply questions, and application questions before submitting. A budget template is also provided.

The maximum award is $15,000 per composer. The grants support the development phase of new operas, not full productions. Composers can use funds for libretto readings, workshop sessions with performers, and working performances of works in progress.

Real-World Example

A woman composer developing a new opera about historical figures would submit an intent to apply by December 18. After gaining access to the full application, she would submit her proposal by January 22. Her project might involve a libretto reading with professional singers ($3,000), a workshop with a director and pianist ($5,000), and a working performance for an invited audience ($7,000). If awarded the full $15,000, she could cover all three development activities within the grant period running from April 2026 to June 2027.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

If you are a woman composer in the United States with an idea for an opera, this grant provides direct funding to develop your work. The $15,000 maximum is substantial for a development-phase grant. You do not need to be affiliated with an opera company to apply. Individual composers are eligible.

Start by submitting your intent to apply in December. This is required to access the full application. Prepare a detailed project description, timeline, and budget. The grant is specifically for opera development, not for concert music, musical theater, or other genres. Only women composers (cis or trans) are eligible.
