The Lithuanian Academy of Music and Theatre (LMTA) is a public higher education institution in Vilnius, Lithuania, founded in 1933. It delivers studies at the bachelor's, master's, and doctoral levels in music, theatre, film, dance, and art history and theory. LMTA is an active member of the European Association of Conservatoires (AEC), the Association of Baltic Academies of Music (ABAM), the Association of Nordic Academies of Music (ANMA), and the European Chamber Music Association (ECMA).

Programs and Degrees

LMTA offers three cycles of study following the Bologna process:

Bachelor's programs (4 years, 240 ECTS credits): Instrumental performance (piano, strings, wind, brass, percussion), vocal studies, composition, conducting, jazz performance, musicology, music education, acting, theatre directing, film and television arts, and dance.

Master's programs (2 years, 120 ECTS credits): Advanced performance, composition, conducting, jazz, musicology, music education, theatre arts, film arts, and dance.

Doctoral programs (4 years): Artistic research and academic research in music and theatre.

The academy maintains exchange programs through Erasmus+ and partnerships with institutions across Europe. Courses taught in English are available primarily at the master's level and for exchange students.

The campus is urban, located in central Vilnius, giving students access to the city's cultural infrastructure including the Lithuanian National Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Lithuanian National Philharmonic, and numerous concert venues.

Admissions and Tuition

Applications for the 2026 intake are open. International students apply directly through the LMTA website, submitting an application form, academic transcripts, a portfolio or audition recording, and proof of language proficiency.

Tuition Fees

Tuition at LMTA differs for Lithuanian and international students:

  • Lithuanian/EU students: From approximately 2,541 USD per year (state-funded places available for qualifying Lithuanian citizens)
  • International students: From approximately 7,500 USD per year, varying by program

The university offers financial aid and scholarships to both local and international students. Additional costs include accommodation, transportation, study materials, and personal expenses. Vilnius has a lower cost of living compared to most Western European capitals, with monthly living costs estimated at 500 to 800 EUR.

After graduation, international students can apply for a job seeker visa to remain in Lithuania for 6 additional months.

Real-World Example

An international student from outside the EU enrolling in the bachelor's program in instrumental performance (piano) pays approximately 7,500 USD per year in tuition. Over four years, total tuition comes to 30,000 USD. Living costs in Vilnius average 600 EUR per month, adding approximately 28,800 EUR over four years. The student trains with faculty who are active performers in Lithuanian and European orchestras, performs in LMTA's concert halls, and participates in Erasmus+ exchange programs that allow them to study for one or two semesters at partner institutions across Europe at no additional tuition cost.

A Lithuanian student admitted to a state-funded place pays no tuition. The same four-year program costs 0 EUR in tuition, with only living expenses to cover.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

LMTA offers a cost-effective path to a recognized European music degree. For international students, tuition starting at 7,500 USD per year is significantly lower than American or UK conservatories, and the lower cost of living in Vilnius further reduces the total investment.

The Erasmus+ exchange program is a major advantage. You can spend up to two semesters studying at partner institutions in Scandinavia, Germany, France, or other European countries without paying additional tuition. This lets you build an international network and experience different teaching approaches while enrolled at LMTA.

LMTA's membership in AEC, ABAM, and ANMA means your degree is recognized across Europe. If you plan to pursue further study or work in the EU, this recognition simplifies the process.

The academy's focus on artistic research at the doctoral level is worth noting if you are interested in combining creative practice with academic inquiry. This is a growing area in European music education.
