Yale School of Music (YSM) is the only graduate-only music school in the Ivy League, founded in 1894 in New Haven, Connecticut. Every admitted student receives a full-tuition award and fellowship, making it one of the few conservatories in the world where graduate music education is entirely free. YSM offers the Master of Music, Master of Musical Arts, Doctor of Musical Arts, Artist Diploma, Certificate in Performance, and a combined B.A./M.M. program with Yale College.

Programs and Degrees

YSM became exclusively a graduate professional school in 1958, requiring an undergraduate degree for admission to most programs. The school offers degrees and programs across all major areas of musical study:

  • Master of Music (M.M.): The largest program, enrolling approximately 70 percent of students. Two-year program requiring a bachelor's degree or equivalent. Offered in all areas of study including brass, collaborative piano, composition, guitar, harp, historical performance, jazz studies, orchestral conducting, organ, percussion, piano, strings, voice, and woodwinds.
  • Master of Musical Arts (M.M.A.): A two-year program for external candidates (one year for internal applicants) requiring an M.M. in the same major. Open to all areas of study.
  • Doctor of Musical Arts (D.M.A.): A two-year residency followed by a three-year professional career period. Requires a master's degree in the same field. Applicants must submit scholarly writing samples and complete exams in music history, analysis, and musicianship.
  • Artist Diploma (A.D.): Limited to six students total. Open only to instrumentalists on the verge of a major concert career. Two-year commitment for external candidates, one year for internal. Includes management guidance and personalized career services.
  • Certificate in Performance: A three-year program for performers who do not yet hold a bachelor's degree. Open to instrumentalists and opera singers. Can be converted to an M.M. if the student later earns a bachelor's degree.
  • B.A./M.M.: A five-year combined program with Yale College for instrumentalists seeking a liberal arts education alongside conservatory training. Not open to composers, conductors, or vocalists.
  • String Quartet Fellowship: A specialized program for pre-formed string quartets.

Tuition and Financial Aid

YSM is tuition-free. Every admitted student receives a full-tuition award and fellowship, with the exception of those receiving awards from other agencies. Students are responsible for living expenses, travel, books, and instrument upkeep.

For the 2026 to 2027 academic year, the published tuition is $42,000, but this is fully covered by the award. The $150 application fee is nonrefundable, and no fee waivers are available (except for B.A./M.M. applicants who received a Yale College fee waiver).

Admissions Process

Applications open on September 15 each year. Key dates for fall 2026 entry:

  • December 1: Application deadline (including prescreening recordings)
  • January 13 (latest): Prescreening results emailed
  • February 16 to 22: Live auditions and DMA exams (by invitation)
  • April 1: Admissions decisions sent
  • April 15: Deadline for admitted students to respond

Applicants cannot apply to a degree program if they already hold the equivalent degree or a doctorate from another institution in the same area. D.M.A. applicants must attend in person for at least two separate days in New Haven.

International applicants whose first language is not English must submit TOEFL or IELTS scores by December 1. Minimum requirements: TOEFL 86 (internet-based) or IELTS Academic 6.5. Duolingo is not accepted.

Real-World Example

A cellist accepted into the M.M. program for fall 2026 pays zero tuition thanks to the full-tuition award. Their only costs are living expenses in New Haven (approximately $18,000 to $24,000 per year for housing, food, and personal expenses), plus the $150 application fee they already paid. Over two years, the student saves $84,000 in tuition compared to the published rate. They study with faculty like Professor Paul Watkins (cello), perform with the Yale Philharmonia, and have access to the Morris Steinert Collection of Musical Instruments. If the same cellist later applies to the D.M.A. program, they receive the same full-tuition award for the two-year residency, saving another $84,000.

Notable alumni include Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Caroline Shaw (M.M. '07), Grammy-winning composer Andrew Norman (M.M. '09), Grammy-winning guitarist and composer Bryce Dessner (B.A. '98, M.M. '99) of The National, and Pulitzer finalist Christopher Cerrone (D.M.A. '14). Historical figures include composer Paul Hindemith, who taught at Yale from 1941 to 1953, and Charles Ives, who studied at Yale College under the school's first dean, Horatio Parker.

Why It Matters for Independent Artists

YSM is the right choice if you want graduate-level conservatory training without taking on debt. The full-tuition award for every admitted student means you graduate with zero student loan burden from tuition, which is rare at this level of training.

The D.M.A. program is worth considering if you want a university-level teaching career. The two-year residency plus three-year professional period structure lets you build a career while completing the degree.

The Artist Diploma program, limited to six students, is designed for performers about to launch a major concert career. It includes management guidance and career services that most conservatories do not offer.

If you are an instrumentalist interested in both performance and liberal arts, the B.A./M.M. program lets you attend Yale College and the School of Music in five years. You pay Yale College tuition for four years, then study tuition-free at YSM for the fifth year.
